Cross on Marine base might come down

The Marine Corps said Monday it is reviewing whether to remove a cross placed on a Camp Pendleton hilltop earlier this month by Marines honoring four comrades killed in Iraq.

The review came after an atheist group argued that the cross on government land violates the separation of church and state.

Several Marines, as well as the widows and children of two of the fallen Marines, carried the 13-foot-tall cross up to the hilltop on Veterans Day. The did so on their own and without Corps permission.

The cross replaced one that had been there since 2003 until it was destroyed by a brushfire in 2007.

"Camp Pendleton legal authorities are researching and reviewing the issue in order to make a judicious decision," the Marine Corps said in a statement reported by the Los Angeles Times Monday.

"As Marines, we are proud to honor our fallen brothers and are also proud of our extended Marine Corps family," it added. "However, it is important to follow procedure and use appropriate processes for doing this in a correct manner to protect the sentiment from question as well as be good stewards of our taxpayer dollars."

The complaint was lodged by the Military Association of Atheists and Freethinkers.

"Posting a Christian cross on federal land is forcing your religion on others," the group said on its Facebook page.

The page has since become a lightning rod for the controversy.

"Marines roll deep and the most dangerous place to be is between a Marine and fallen Marines," posted one person.

Kelsii. :D

I'd love to join up as Vampires and Werewolves was so much fun.

Would need to work out what characters I could make use of though.

Caddie would certainly fit in, though I've got a few others who might who're a bit more out there species-wise. I'll give it some thought when it's not nearly 3am in my timezone.

Gingrich backs privatized Social Security for young (Reuters)

MANCHESTER, New Hampshire (Reuters) ? Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich on Monday called for the creation of private Social Security accounts for younger workers as a way to spur economic growth through new investment in stocks and bonds.

The former House of Representatives speaker, now one of the front-runners for the Republican nomination to face President Barack Obama in 2012, outlined his ideas for reform of so-called government entitlement programs at St. Anselm College in Manchester, New Hampshire.

Gingrich said his plan was modeled on that of Chile, which established private pay-as-you go retirement accounts in 1981, and that it would be optional.

"Because it builds up interest over time, the collective value to Americans is enormous," Gingrich said. "You could have some mix of stocks and bonds, it would be your choice."

He estimated that private accounts could yield, on average, 7 percent per year -- a projection many investment advisers would say is optimistic.

Social Security is the U.S. retirement program. How to keep the program from going bankrupt, as the ratio of retirees drawing benefits to workers paying into the fund increases, is a key part of the debate over U.S. financial reform.

Gingrich's standing in the polls among Republican voters has soared in recent weeks, placing him among the leaders. in January, New Hampshire holds the first primary election on the road to the Republican nomination and the second contest overall, after the Iowa caucuses.

Gingrich said after his speech that he was confident that younger workers, who fear they will never see Social Security payouts when they reach retirement, would back his plan.

"I'm not going to go around the country trying to sell it, I'm going to try to get hundreds of thousands of young people on social media to decide that it's their program," he said.

He said a proposal to convert certain federal programs for the poor into block grants to state governments would save enough money to cover a deficit in funds available to pay out to older workers and retirees if younger workers opted out of Social Security.

Gingrich promised to establish job-retraining programs for "lawyers and bureaucrats" who would be thrown out of work during his presidency because of his proposed tort reform and budget reduction measures. He also promised to teach an online civics class as president.

Though lacking in funds and campaign organization in early voting states such as New Hampshire and Iowa, Gingrich said he expected his rise to continue due to the attention of the news media and because of his debating skills.

"Imagine October of next year, when President Obama's got a billion dollars to spend in trying to smear his opponents, and the only way you can break through is the debates," Gingrich said. "Who would you like to have on the same platform with Obama? And I think at that point a Gingrich candidacy becomes much more plausible."

Strategy Analytics: China leapfrogs US to become world's top smartphone market

The winds of tech consumerism are changing course. More specifically, they're heading east. According to the latest Q3 figures from Strategy Analytics, China is now the world's largest smartphone market by volume, overtaking the US for the first time. According to the research firm, smartphone shipments in China reached a record high of 23.9 million units during the third quarter of this year, up 58 percent from Q2. Compare that with the US, which saw shipments decline by seven percent over the quarter, to 23.3 million units. The Boston-based firm attributed much of China's growth to a spike in cheaper, Android-based handsets from companies like ZTE, as well as a flowering of subsidized higher-end models, like the iPhone. Nokia leads the way within the People's Republic, accounting for 28 percent of all quarterly shipments, followed by Samsung, with an 18 percent share. Find more quotes and charts in the press release after the break, or hit up the source link below for the full report.

EU relaxes ban on Angolan airlines

(AP) ? The European Union relaxed its ban on Angola's TAAG Airlines flying in European airspace, imposed a partial ban on Jordan Aviation and noted significant aviation safety improvements in Albania and Russia.

The EU's latest blacklist on Monday banned three of Jordan Aviation's Boeing 767s from flying to Europe. The charter company often works for the United Nations to transport its peacekeepers.

Siim Kallas, the EU commissioner responsible for transport, said the bloc could not accept any compromises when it comes to air safety.

"Where we have evidence ... that air carriers are not performing safe operations, we must act to exclude any risks to safety," he said.

The EU list of 281 airlines from 24 countries ? mostly smaller carriers from Africa and Asia ? banned from flying in European airspace was established in 2006 and is updated regularly.

But critics say most of the notorious African cargo outfits still on the list have been shut down. Many others on it involve air taxi services or small, specialized charter firms that work for mining, oil and gas and other natural resources companies, usually to transport employees to remote work sites.

The update for TAAG means that it can fly into Europe using its two modern Boeing 777-300 airliners "which the air carrier has shown that it is capable to manage safely," the EU statement said.

Meanwhile, the commission said Russia and Albania had made significant progress in improving flight safety and that no punitive measures would be taken against any of their airlines.

The EU banned all operations to Europe by aircraft belonging to Rollins Air, a charter and leasing company registered in Honduras.

The list also includes 11 air carriers that are allowed to operate in Europe subject to strict conditions and restrictions on which planes they can use. These include North Korea's Air Koryo and Iran's national flag carrier Air Iran.
