NEW YORK ? Horse meat is not something New Yorkers are accustomed to eating, but it will soon be added to the menu at the M. Wells Diner in Queens.

?It doesn?t sound appetizing to me, but that?s their prerogative,? remarked neighbor Dave Nellhaus.

M. Wells opens Thursday inside the MoMA P.S. 1 Museum in Long Island City, an iteration of its former eatery, which shuttered in August 2011 amid a rent dispute with the landlord.
?
Last year, Congress lifted a ban on the slaughter of horses in the U.S., although there is no real market for human consumption of horse meat in the states.

Many Americans consider horses to be pets, but in some

Bill Nguyen Leaves Color - Business Insider

Color CEO Bill Nguyen seems to be withdrawing from the company, reports TechCrunch.

The location-based photo startup famously received $41 million in funding, but there has been some trouble lately.

Nguyen has "completely stepped away from his day-to-day duties" at the company and hasn't been seen at the headquarters in two months.

There are unconfirmed rumors that he's even sold his home in Silicon Valley and has taken up residence "either in Tahoe or Hawaii."

TechCrunch was able to get Nguyen on the phone as he was boarding a plane to Maui.

?I do this historically," he said. "I take off for a little while and I vacation. It?s nothing new or exciting. The roles of founders and CEOs is to get everyone engaged and give opportunities to people. And when things haven?t worked out as expected, the best way for me to recharge is to go on sabbatical.?

Nguyen also acknowledged that other board members are less than pleased that he's maintained the title of CEO while off the map, and the issue will be discussed at the next board meeting.

However, Nguyen explained that he'll not appear at the meeting in person ? "I?m going to have to call in, because I?ll be in Maui.?

Bailey pitches no-hitter, Reds beat Pirates 1-0

PITTSBURGH (AP) ? Homer Bailey had a certain milestone on his mind when he walked to the mound Friday night. He wound up pulling off an even bigger feat.

Bailey pitched the seventh no-hitter in the majors this season, leading the Cincinnati Reds to a 1-0 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The right-hander began the night with 195 innings pitched this season and was eager to reach 200 for the first time in his six-year career.

"I looked up at the scoreboard (after the fifth inning) to see if I had hit 200 and saw a couple of zeros," Bailey said. "That's when I knew I had a chance at a no-hitter. It's not something you think about doing."

It was the 15th no-hitter in Reds history and first since Tom Browning's perfect game against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sept. 16, 1988.

The seven major league no-hitters match the modern record for one season, tying 1990 and 1991. There were eight no-hitters in 1884.

"I don't think there is any reason why there have been so many," Bailey said. "There is a real fine line there in throwing a no-hitter. A bloop can fall in the outfield or an infielder can be in the wrong position and there goes your hit. You have to be extremely fortunate to throw a no-hitter and we had luck on our side tonight."

Bailey (13-10) struck out 10 and walked one. He threw 115 pitches and retired the side in order in the ninth, striking out pinch-hitter Brock Holt before getting pinch-hitter Michael McKenry and Alex Presley to pop out.

When second baseman Brandon Phillips caught Presley's popup on the outfield grass, Bailey was mobbed near the mound by happy teammates and doused with water.

The 26-year-old Bailey improved to 5-0 with a 1.40 ERA in six career starts at PNC Park. All three of his complete games and both his shutouts have come against Pittsburgh.

It was the first time the Pirates had been held hitless since Hall of Famer Bob Gibson pitched the lone no-hitter of his career in 1971 for the St. Louis Cardinals.

Cincinnati, which clinched the NL Central title last Saturday, improved to 95-62. The Reds are tied with Washington for the best record in the NL.

Bailey has been touted as a future ace since Cincinnati selected him seventh overall in the 2004 amateur draft following his senior year of high school in LaGrange, Texas.

He has a 38-33 career record and has set a season high for wins. Reds bench coach Chris Speier, serving as acting manager while Dusty Baker recovers from a mini-stroke, thinks the no-hitter could serve as a benchmark moment for Bailey.

"He's always been a good thrower, but he's really learned how to pitch this season," Speier said. "You saw the evolution tonight."

The other no-hitters this season were thrown by Philip Humber of the Chicago White Sox, Jered Weaver of the Los Angeles Angels, Johan Santana of the New York Mets, Matt Cain of the San Francisco Giants, Felix Hernandez of Seattle and a combined six-pitcher effort by the Mariners. Humber, Cain and Hernandez each had a perfect game.

Pittsburgh (76-81) made its own bit of history as it was assured of a 20th consecutive non-winning season with the loss, extending its major North American professional sports record.

Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said Bailey had more than luck going for him. Hurdle sensed Bailey and catcher Ryan Hanigan were on the same page right from the first inning.

"They were spot-on with almost every pitch," Hurdle said. "He kept throwing fastball up and away and breaking balls down and in and it was just an effective combination."

It was also the first no-hitter caught by Hanigan, who broke into the majors with Bailey in 2007.

"It's very special because Homer and I have been there every step of the way," Hanigan said. "It's great for Homer, it's great for the organization and it's just great for the team because it's another special moment in what has been a very special season."

Bailey retired his first six batters before third baseman Scott Rolen booted Clint Barmes' leadoff grounder in the third inning for an error. Bailey then set down 13 straight until walking Andrew McCutchen with one out in the seventh while clinging to the one-run lead.

McCutchen stole second but then was thrown out by Hanigan attempting to steal third. Garrett Jones flied out to the warning track in right field to end the inning.

Cincinnati needed to make just one above-average defensive play behind Bailey. Left fielder Todd Frazier ran down Presley's flare toward the foul line to end the third.

With the Reds employing a defensive shift, left-handed hitter Pedro Alvarez lined out to Rolen in the eighth.

"I thought the no-hitter was gone when Alvarez hit that ball, but fortunately the shift was on," Bailey said.

A.J. Burnett (16-9) allowed seven hits in eight innings with five strikeouts and one walk.

"The way A.J. pitched, it was going to take almost nothing short of a no-hitter to beat him," Hurdle said.

The Reds scored in the first inning on Frazier's sacrifice fly after loading the bases with no outs on singles by Phillips and Zach Cozart and a walk to Joey Votto.

Phillips, Cozart and Rolen all had two hits.

The loss continued the Pirates' downhill spiral. They have gone 13-36 since moving a season-high 16 games over .500 on Aug. 8 with a 63-47 record.

NOTES: Speier said he had a telephone conversation with Baker, who has missed the last nine games. Speier said the veteran manager "is feeling very, very good and looking forward to getting back." Baker is scheduled to rejoin the Reds on Monday night when they open a three-game series at St. Louis to end the regular season. ... Pittsburgh 2B Neil Walker will miss the rest of the season because of lower back soreness that has limited him to eight games in September. ... Reds LF Ryan Ludwick, who has missed eight straight games with tightness in his left groin, is expected to return to the lineup Sunday. ... Cincinnati RHP Mike Leake (8-9, 4.73 ERA) will face Pittsburgh RHP Kyle McPherson (0-2, 3.54) on Saturday night.

How To Leak a Secret in Bulgaria

Wikileaks founder Julian Assange addresses the press and his supporters.

The following is the second of three articles adapted from Andy Greenberg's This Machine Kills Secrets: How WikiLeakers, Cypherpunks, and Hacktivists Aim To Free the World?s Information, out now from Dutton. Read the first part here.

When Assen Yordanov ended his career as a buffalo shepherd and became an investigative reporter, one of his early scoops involved sneaking into to an illegal cigarette factory north of his hometown of Burgas in 1995. Yordanov?s story led to the factory?s shutdown and a two-year police investigation, but no arrests. He did, however, receive his first death threat, a letter warning him to ?reserve a place in the cemetery for his tomb.? And he made his first acquaintance with Bulgaria?s most powerful man.

?One of those men involved in this factory that I exposed was Boyko Borisov,? Yordanov told me when we met in a sunny caf? in the Bulgarian Black Sea resort town of Varvara. Yordanov is a broad-shouldered man in a black T-shirt, with a half-week?s worth of stubble, and he?s taken off his pair of scuffed Oakley knockoffs to show me the serious expression behind them. ?Today, he is the prime minister of Bulgaria. And sixteen years ago I showed that he is a criminal.?

In 1995, Yordanov?s accusations against Borisov hadn?t stuck. In 2011, with the help of WikiLeaks? model of anonymously leaked documents, he would have another shot.

Yordanov and his smaller, techier partner Atanas Tchobanov met in 2008, when Tchobanov, a Bulgarian expatriate in Paris working with Reporters Without Borders, interviewed Yordanov about a knife ambush that had nearly killed Yordanov outside his home in the eastern Bulgarian city of Burgas.

Yordanov believed the attackers were linked with a story about corrupt real estate deals he had written. But he had no intention of backing down. Instead, he wanted Tchobanov to help him go further, to launch their own investigative news website. They called it Bivol, the Bulgarian word for Yordanov?s favorite animal, the buffalo. And despite running it with near-zero budget, the rare independent Bulgarian media outlet had immediate impact. Rumiana Jeleva, Bulgaria?s foreign minister, was set to be confirmed as a representative of the European Commission. Yordanov and Tchobanov helped to uncover financial ties she had failed to disclose, showing that she continued to own a consulting company long after she had claimed to have no interests in it. The story contributed to an investigation of Jeleva that was picked up in foreign media and finally led to her resignation from not only the EU post, but also her ministry position.

But Tchobanov could sense that Yordanov?s traditional breed of muckraking was endangered: In September of 2008, the journalist Ognyan Stefanov had been stopped outside a Sofia restaurant one night and brutally beaten with hammers and steel bars, left for dead with broken arms and legs and a severe concussion that he barely survived. In this case, the attack had a new twist: The victim had attempted?and failed?to remain anonymous.

Stefanov was secretly the editor of the blog Opasnite Novini??Dangerous News??that 10 days before had published a story based on a leak that showed officials in the new intelligence agency DANS were involved in a smuggling ring. DANS, whose name translates to ?National Security Agency,? had been formed the same year, supposedly to fight organized crime. Somehow it had identified Stefanov.

In a government investigation that followed Stefanov?s beating and through more anonymous leaks to the press, DANS was revealed to be engaged in mass wiretapping of journalists and government officials. (By 2010, the Bulgarian government would perform around 15,000 wiretaps annually, close to 200 times the number per capita reported in the United States that year.) The mass surveillance and intimidation tactics of the Communist-era Darzhavna Sigurnost were alive and thriving.

Tchobanov knew that Bivol needed new ways to protect itself and its sources. So he simply typed ?anonymous submissions? into Google. Soon he began to discover the cypherpunks? many gifts to journalists: the email encryption program PGP, Off-the-Record encrypted instant messaging, the anonymity software Tor. And WikiLeaks.

The Bulgarian technophile was immediately fascinated by the site?s technical methods and utter fearlessness. He began to monitor its leaks closely, and even experimented with uploading an unverified document that a source had sent him, in the hopes that this mysterious group might be able to authenticate it and publish it to a global audience. The document, written in Bulgarian, never surfaced on the site.

How Do You Grade Yourself? [Success]

How Do You Grade Yourself? If you had to grade yourself on success, what would you focus on? As entrepreneur Derek Sivers illustrates, we all judge ourselves by different measures.

In New York City, there are dozens of buildings that say TRUMP on them. As I was driving about an hour into the rural countryside, I even saw a Donald J Trump Park. It made me wonder if he grades himself by how many valuable properties bear his name. Plenty of real estate tycoons have made billions without putting their name on everything, but maybe that's his measure.

Then I thought about how we all grade ourselves by different measures.

For some people, it's as simple as how much money they make. When their net worth is going up, they know they're doing well. For others, it's how much money they give.

For some people, it's how many people's lives they can influence for the better. For others, it's how deeply they can influence just a few people's lives.

For me, it's how many useful things I create. "Things" can be songs, companies, articles, websites, or anything else I created. But doing something useful that doesn't need my creative contribution doesn't interest me. And if I create something that's not useful to anyone, it doesn't count.

I asked a few friends, "How do you grade yourself?" and got some great answers:

Pilar, a teacher, said, "How many kids I'm steering in a positive direction."

Mara said, "How well I'm achieving the various goals I've set out for myself."

Gary Jules said, "How helpful I'm being." (And noted that his measure has been changing, now that he has a family.)

Ariel Hyatt said, "How my work affects and resonates with people. And how many great joy-filled moments I've spent with the people in my life."

Jared Rose, my business coach said, "My personal measure is how loved my friends and family feel by me, and how much of a difference I've made in their life. My business measure is how much of an impact I've made for my clients and their customers. I grade that by the percentage improved."

Tim Ferriss said, "Both of equal importance: How many people I help overcome fears. My rate of skill acquisition. I like to have at least two measurements, but not too many, to diversify your identity, just like you would diversify a portfolio to hedge against risk. If one of your metrics takes a nose dive due to factors outside of your control, you want a balancing metric that can make progress and save you from depression."

Interesting!

What about you?

It's tempting to say, "How happy I am." But like Einstein said, "Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler."

For this question, I think happiness is the end result of living in line with your measure?or grading yourself well. So I'm interested in the 2nd-to-last step: the measure where the positive result is happiness.

So what's that measure, for you? What are the common threads running through your pursuits in life?

  • How many places you visit?
  • How many people you can call friends?
  • What you weigh?
  • How much time you spend laughing?
  • How long you live?

Fiona Apple's 'Alarming' Weight Loss Could Signal - RadarOnline.com

Pacific Coast News

By Debbie Emery - Radar Reporter

Until last week, Fiona Apple was best known for her Grammy-award winning music career, but now the singer's health and legal problems are at the forefront of her fans' attention.

Apple looked sickly skinny when she performed at a concert in New Orleans on Tuesday night, and her emaciated appearance and recent drug arrest have sparked concern among health experts that she may be struggling to deal with the stress in her life, RadarOnline.com is exclusively reporting.

As we previously reported, the Every Single Night star was busted for marijuana possession on September 19 when it was found on her tour bus during a routine check at a border stop in the Texas town of Sierra Blanca.

PHOTOS: Sexy Stars Who Have Been Arrested

While the 35-year-old spoke of drinking ?marijuana-laced lemonade? and smoking pot with writer Dan Lee earlier this year, her shockingly thin figure doesn't look typical of a stoner, nutritionist Dr. Fred Pescatore, who has not treated the singer, told RadarOnline.com in an exclusive interview.

"She does look gaunt and pot is usually not the only culprit in that situation," he speculated.

"It looks as if she is in a downward spiral and that may be causing her to be apathetic to how she appears," said Dr. Pescatore, who estimates that the 5'2" singer has lost 30 pounds and plummeted to a low of 90 pounds.

PHOTOS: Celebrities Who Have Admitted To Smoking Pot

It is not the first time that Fiona has undergone a dramatic weight loss. Back in 1997, it was speculated that Apple suffered from an eating disorder with The New Yorker claiming she ?looked like an underfed Calvin Klein model.?

Psychotherapist Jessica Aronson, who has not treated Apple, told Radar that she is concerned the singer, who admitted to battling an eating disorder in her teens following a horrific sexual assault when she was only 12 years old, may be returning to old bad habits to help deal with her current situation.

PHOTOS: Celebrity Mugshots

"I would guess she is numbing herself from something? - most likely feelings," said Aronson. "Being in the public eye and getting arrested for drug use brings attention to herself and highlights whatever difficulty she is going through.

"Her pictures certainly look alarming and concerning," revealed the psychotherapist.

Consumers lift spending to pay for pricier gasoline

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. consumer spending rose in August as households stretched to pay for higher gasoline prices and factory activity in the Midwest contracted this month for the first time in three years, pointing to lackluster economic growth.

The Commerce Department said consumer spending rose 0.5 percent after an unrevised 0.4 percent gain in July.

The increase was the biggest in six months, but was largely accounted for by pricier gasoline. When adjusted for inflation, spending edged up a scant 0.1 percent after increasing 0.4 percent in July.

"Demand growth in has slowed materially in recent months, across household, business and export sectors. The risks to output growth in the near term remain firmly to the downside," said Peter Newland, a senior economist at Barclays in New York.

With the inflation adjusted spending barely rising last month, growth in real consumer spending is unlikely to improve much this quarter from the tepid 1.5 percent annual pace recorded in the April-June period.

The growth picture was further dimmed by a second report from the Institute for Supply Management-Chicago showing its business barometer fell to 49.7 from 53.0 in August.

The drop below the 50 mark, which separates growth from contraction, was the first since September 2009 and reflected a contraction in new orders and a slowdown in hiring.

It was in line with recent reports flagging a cooling in manufacturing, a sector that has been the pillar of the economy's recovery from the 2007-09 recession.

"To the extent that the moderation in manufacturing activity is reflecting weakening domestic and global demand, it may be a harbinger of continued sup-par GDP growth performance in the coming months," said Millan Mulraine, a senior economist at TD Securities in New York.

But households appear little perturbed by the expensive gasoline and gathering dark clouds over the economy. Consumer confidence touched a four-month high in September, boosted by higher stock market prices and gains in home values.

The Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan's final reading on consumer sentiment rose to 78.3 from 74.3 in August, a third report showed.

U.S. stocks were trading lower, while prices for U.S. Treasury debt rose. The dollar gained versus a basket of currencies.

SLOWING CONSUMER SPENDING

Consumer spending accounts for about 70 percent of U.S. economic activity and the second straight monthly increase mostly reflected higher gasoline prices, which rose 28.2 cents per gallon last month, though automobile purchases also helped.

Spending on nondurable goods jumped 1.7 percent in August after increasing 0.8 percent the previous month. Household spending on services rose a modest 0.2 percent compared to 0.3 percent in July.

Slower consumer spending and a drop in farm inventories due to a severe drought in the Midwest held gross domestic product growth to a 1.3 percent pace in the second quarter, a step down from 2 percent in the first three months of the year.

With gasoline prices rising, inflation pressures picked up a bit last month. A price index for personal consumer expenditures increased 0.4 percent, the largest gain since March last year, after being flat in July.

In the 12 months through August, the PCE price index rose 1.5 percent after increasing 1.3 percent in July.

However, a measure which strips out food and energy costs, rose only 0.1 percent from July. The index advanced by the same margin in July.

In the 12 months to August, the core PCE price index, increased 1.6 percent - matching July's increase. It was the fifth straight month of increases below 2 percent.

The Federal Reserve has a 2 percent inflation target and the still-moderate pace of inflation should give the U.S. central bank comfort to maintain its accommodative monetary policy stance for a while as it seeks to spur job growth and domestic demand.

Income nudged up 0.1 percent but was eroded by the rise in inflation. The amount of income at the disposal of households after accounting for inflation and taxes fell 0.3 percent after ticking up 0.1 percent in July. That was the first decline since November.

With spending outstripping income growth, the saving rate slipped 3.7 percent last month from 4.1 percent in July.

Discover 3Q profit slips, but tops Street view

BOSTON (AP) ? Discover Financial Services on Thursday reported a slight earnings decline in its fiscal third quarter, but the result easily beat Wall Street expectations as credit card use increased and more customers paid off their card balances on time.

Those gains helped offset higher expenses, including a legal bill from a settlement with regulators, and shares of Discover rose nearly 4 percent in morning trading.

The Riverwoods, Ill.-based company reported net income of $621 million, or $1.21 per share, for the quarter ended Aug. 31, after paying preferred shareholders.

That was down 3 percent from $642 million in last year's third quarter. Discover's per-share earnings in the year-ago period were $1.18, slightly lower than in the latest quarter because the company had a greater number of common shares outstanding last year. Discover repurchased about 10 million shares for $350 million in the latest quarter.

The latest quarter's earnings topped the consensus forecast of analysts surveyed by FactSet, who expected $1.03 per share.

Revenue rose nearly 10 percent to $1.96 billion from $1.79 billion, beating analysts' forecast for $1.9 billion.

Shares of Discover rose $1.35, or about 3.7 percent, to $38.37 in late morning trading. The stock has risen more than 50 percent this year, in part due to improvement in customer payment habits.

Discover, which provides banking services including issuing its namesake credit cards, said total loans grew 9 percent from the year-ago quarter to $59.2 billion. Credit card loans and Discover card sales volume both increased 4 percent.

Nomura Equity Research analyst Bill Carcache said in a note to clients that the card loan growth suggests that Discover continues to gain share in the revolving credit market, which he estimated is growing at a 1 percent annual rate.

Carcache, who has a "buy" rating on the stock, characterized the company's quarterly revenue performance as a "solid" beat compared with expectations. He attributed the performance in part to better-than-expected net interest income, as money earned from loans increased 11 percent compared with a year ago, due to loan growth and lower interest expenses.

Discover Chairman and CEO David Nelms said card sales and customer payments on balances due "grew in a challenging environment while credit quality continued to improve."

The third-quarter increase in total loans came amid a slump in consumer sentiment due to the slow economic recovery and weak hiring. Discover tracks sentiment through a monthly index of spending intentions, and reported its Discover U.S. Spending Monitor fell to its lowest level of the year in August.

Credit card loans over 30 days past due fell to an all-time low, dropping to 1.81 percent of balances on an annualized basis, from 2.43 percent a year ago.

Charge-offs, or loans written off as unpaid, fell $151 million from a year ago, due to declines in delinquencies and bankruptcies.

Discover increased its provision for loan losses by 26 percent to $126 million, as the company set aside more money while making more loans.

Discover also said the yield earned from credit cards declined, due to fewer high rate balances and an increase in promotional rate balances.

Expenses jumped 29 percent to $826 million, primarily because of a $94 million increase for legal reserves due to a regulatory agreement announced last week.

Discover agreed to pay a $14 million fine and refund $200 million directly to certain customers under deal with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. and the U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. The agreement resolved accusations by regulators that Discover pressured credit card customers to buy costly add-on services like payment protection and credit monitoring. Discover previously established a reserve of $115.9 million in anticipation of the settlement.

Expenses, as well as revenue, are both up in part because Discover's operations have grown. The company closed in June on its $45.9 million acquisition of Tree.com Inc.'s mortgage business and began originating residential mortgages. Discover also recently added a fixed-rate private student loan product, and its first major affinity credit card.

In the latest quarter, Discover reported a 13 percent increase in transaction volume at its payment services business, to $50.3 billion. That segment, which competes with Visa and MasterCard, reported a 31 percent increase in pretax income, to $49 million.

    Ahmadinejad pushes new world order

NEW YORK (AP) ? After an hour of fielding questions about Syria, sanctions and nuclear weapons, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad had enough. Now, he said, it was his turn to choose the topic ? his "new order" which will inevitably replace the current era of what he called U.S. bullying.

Continuing his hectic pace of media appearances and diplomatic meetings, Ahmadinejad presented an air of boredom when it came to the hot topic on everyone's mind ? Iran's nuclear program and the possibility of impending war. Whether it was feigned or sincere, he said he would much rather be talking about his vision of what the next world order might be.

Conveniently, it would be an order in which the U.S. and the traditional powers play a smaller role and every country has equal standing (though the state of Israel, he often predicts, will soon become a historical footnote).

"God willing, a new order will come and will do away with ... everything that distances us," Ahmadinejad told The Associated Press in an interview Tuesday, speaking through a translator. "All of the animosity, all of the lack of sincerity will come to an end. It will institute fairness and justice."

He said the world was losing patience with the current state of affairs.

"Now even elementary school kids throughout the world have understood that the United States government is following an international policy of bullying," he said. "I do believe the system of empires has reached the end of the road. The world can no longer see an emperor commanding it."

The interview was held on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly ? Ahmadinejad's last as president of Iran. He was to address the assembly Wednesday morning.

He also discussed solutions for the Syrian civil war, dismissed the question of Iran's nuclear ambition and claimed that despite Western sanctions his country is better off than it was when he took office in 2005.

Earlier Tuesday, President Barack Obama warned Iran that time is running out to resolve the dispute over its nuclear program. In a speech to the General Assembly, Obama said the United States could not tolerate an Iran with atomic weapons.

Ahmadinejad would not respond directly to the president's remarks, saying he did not want to influence the U.S. presidential election in November.

But he argued that the international outcry over Iran's nuclear enrichment program was just an excuse by the West to dominate his country. He claimed that the United States has never accepted Iran's choice of government after the 1979 Islamic revolution.

"Everyone is aware the nuclear issue is the imposition of the will of the United States," he said. "I see the nuclear issue as a non-issue. It has become a form of one-upmanship."

Ahmadinejad said he favored more dialogue, even though negotiations with world powers remain stalled after three rounds of high-level meetings since April.

He said some world leaders have suggested to him that Iran would be better off holding nuclear talks only with the United States.

"Of course I am not dismissing such talks," he said, asked if he were open to discussions with the winner of the American presidential election.

Israeli leaders, however, are still openly contemplating military action again Iranian nuclear facilities, dismissing diplomacy as a dead end. Israel and many in the West suspect that Iran is seeking to acquire nuclear weapons, and cite its failure to cooperate fully with nuclear inspectors. Iran says its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes only.

Ahmadinejad also proposed forming a new group of 10 or 11 countries to work to end the 18-month Syrian civil war. Representatives of nations in the Middle East and elsewhere would meet in New York "very soon," he said.

Critics have accused Tehran of giving support to Syrian President Bashar Assad in carrying out massacres and other human rights violations in an attempt to crush the uprising against his rule. Activists say nearly 30,000 people have died.

Ahmadinejad said the so-called contact group hopes to get the Syrian government and opposition to sit across from each other.

"I will do everything in my power to create stability, peace and understanding in Syria," Ahmadinejad said.

Earlier this month, Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi announced the formation of a four-member contact group with Iran, Turkey and Saudi Arabia. But Saudi Arabia so far has not participated.

Ahmadinejad denied Iranian involvement in plotting attacks on Israelis abroad, despite arrests and accusations by police in various countries. He also vehemently disputed the U.S. claim that Iranian agents played a role in a foiled plot to assassinate the Saudi ambassador to the United States last year.

Ahmadinejad will leave office next June after serving two four-year terms. He threw out numbers and statistics during the interview to show that Iran's economy and the lives of average Iranians have improved under his watch. Since his 2005 election, he claimed, Iran went from being the world's 22nd-largest economy to the 17th-largest; non-petroleum related exports increased sevenfold; and the basic production of goods has doubled. Median income increased by $4,000, he said.

It was not possible to immediately verify his figures.

"Today's conditions in Iran are completely different to where they were seven years ago in the economy, in technical achievement, in scientific know-how," Ahmadinejad said. "All of these achievements, though, have been reached under conditions in which we were brought under heavy sanctions."

Iran has called for the U.S. and its European allies to ease the sanctions that have hit its critical oil exports and left it blackballed from key international banking networks.

Ahmadinejad said he had no knowledge of the whereabouts of Robert Levinson, a private investigator and former FBI agent who vanished in Iran five years ago. He said he directed Iranian intelligence services two years ago to work with their counterparts in the U.S. to locate him.

"And if any help there is that I can bring to bear, I would be happy to do so," he said.

He also claimed never to have heard of Amir Hekmati, a former U.S. Marine who is imprisoned on espionage charges in Iran. Hekmati was arrested while visiting his grandmothers in Iran in August 2011, and his family has been using Ahmadinejad's visit to New York to plead for his release.

In spite of Ahmadinejad's assertions on the importance of dialogue and respect for others, he has presented a hard line in many areas in this week's media appearances.

He refuses to speak of the state of Israel by name and instead refers only to the "Zionists." And when asked on Monday about author Salman Rushdie, he made no attempt to distance himself from recent renewed threats on the author's life emanating from an Iranian semi-official religious foundation.

"If he is in the U.S.," said the president of Iran, "you should not broadcast it for his own safety."

Fitbloggin' Health and Fitness Conference Recap

I'm back from Fitbloggin'12 in Baltimore, Maryland. What a great weekend! FitBloggin? is an annual health and fitness conference where hundreds of bloggers and brands from across the country come together to discuss health and fitness related topics and how to utilize social media to help promote overall wellness. This was my first year attending.

I felt proud being the weight loss surgery lifestyle blogger representative and sharing what life is like with rearranged guts. We may have had an initial helping hand with surgical assistance but we're not too different from each other. Life = healthy food choices, moving the body daily and working on the head. Rinse, lather, repeat, FOREVER whether you had surgery or not.

I learned a ton at the educational sessions, made some healthy new pals and connected with some old pals. I love going to conferences like these they are so crammed packed with information, smiles and laughter.

I am thankful to Fitbloggin' for offering the opportunity to Liveblog a session in exchange for a free ticket. I was assigned to live blog a session called, "Drive More Traffic Through SEO" presented by Brandi K. of DietsinReview.com a website I often read. You can read my liveblog notes from her presentation on the Fitbloggin' website if you want to know more about Search Engine Optimization. She shared some awesome, surprisingly easy and free tips. If you blog and you want Google to give you love be sure to read the session notes.
I want to also thank Big Train makers of nom nom nom Fit Frappe for picking up some of the tab for my trip. In exchange my fellow blogging pal Beth and I had the super enjoyable task of sharing our love for their product with the new blogger pals we made. If you haven't tried Fit Frappe you have to try it, it's soooo good.
Made lots of new friends. Here's Mark L. past contestant on The Biggest Loser Season 10. My pal Beth and I shared our Big Train Fit Frappe with him and he shared one of his favorite protein sources with us. Here's Beth and I doing a video review of his Protein Ice Power Shots.

The Food: I ate some delicious food. Lots of protein. I had Maryland crab (of course) in a salad and in a killer soup. I will try and recreate that soup soon. The Fitbloggin' meals provided were great, which is not always the case at these conventions. I was impressed. Moist, flavorful chicken and salmon, lovely salads, hard boiled egg Popsicles at breaks with little bottles of Tabasco sauce (such a cute idea), a celery root soup with chive oil that was the bomb, eggplant tapenade and veggies. Lots of healthy choices for this high protein, low carber.
The Hotel: We stayed at the Hyatt Regency Baltimore Inner Harbor. If you are going to Baltimore for a convention or family trip I highly recommend it, for location it can't be beat. The hotel staff was lovely and helpful, the convention facilities were great, the rooms are fine, comfortable beds, clean. The only negative was one night we returned late and everything was closed (hotel store, room service, there were no vending machines) so I bit the bullet at grabbed a drink out of the mini bar. I hated paying the $5 but I was dying of thirst. I hated it even more when I realized the slightly funky tasting, thicker than normal drink had expired a few weeks ago. I had them remove the charge and I'm not dead so it's all good.

The City: I had never been to Baltimore (Charm City) funny because as most of you know I grew up on Long Island. I'm a New Yorker born and raised. You'd think I'd have taken a family trip there but nope. We didn't get any daytime sightseeing in but we did walk several miles one night from our hotel in the Inner Harbor through Little Italy and Fell's Point and then took a Water Taxi home. I wrestled a giant crab and kissed a fish.

The Swag: Scored a lot of fun stuff from the awesome Fitbloggin sponsors. Super cool new RealFlex Fusion TR workout shoes from Reebok, Spices from McCormick Seasonings, that new Blender Bottle Sport Mixer, I had to have one of these stuffed eggs (a long lost cousin) from Eggland's Best, some swag sadly I had to pass on to pals... my yoga mat and a huge bottle of Febreze Laundry Odor Eliminator (for us stinky exercisers) because I was edging close to the 50 pound weight limit on my luggage. It would be cool if they did more freebie coupons next year on the big stuff for those that have to fly from distances. Despite the stuff I passed on I still have a huge bag of awesome to sample. I'll review a few in the coming weeks.

I fell in love with these mini trampolines from JumpSport Fitness they are so much fun and seriously they are one kick ass workout. I watched an hour long trainer led session and the sweat was dripping from people. I am so getting one. I need the one with the safety handle at first. I'm a little wobbly and I think the bar will help me feel more secure. I'm thinking with practice one day I will not need it but I used to twist my ankle and fall a lot before I lost weight and I think I still have a bit of a fear. If you are looking for a fun workout this is it. I mean hello?! It's a trampoline! I felt like Tom Hanks in that scene in "Big."

Next year's Fitbloggin'13 event will take place in Portland, Oregon from June 25th ? 27th. The day before my birthday so plan to come celebrate with me. If you are like me and are documenting your weight loss journey with a blog you won't want to miss it!

New Fitbloggin' pals please connect with me on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest. Would love to keep in touch!

How to Help Battered Women - Nichelle Mitchem

October has been designated as national domestic violence awareness month. National domestic violence awareness month is fast approaching. With that said, in this post we will discuss,? ?How can you help battered women escape an abusive relationship??.

There are several ways that you can help a person in an abusive relationship. First, you must be a patient and non-judgmental listener. Respect your friend or family member?s decisions regarding how to handle their relationship. There are many reasons why victims stay in abusive relationships. Secondly, you can encourage him or her to talk to people who can provide help and guidance. Assist your friend in locating a local domestic violence agency that provides counseling and/or shelter. If the person elects to go to the police, court or a lawyer, you can offer to accompany them for moral support. It is important to be mindful that you cannot rescue the person being abused. Although it is difficult to see someone you care about being hurt only the abused person can decide when to take the requisite steps to secure a life free from the violence and turmoil which occurs in an abusive relationship.

It is important when speaking to a victim of domestic violence that you be an attentive listener. What does that mean in this context:

    • Ask open-ended questions
    • Beware of body language
      • let the survivor guide you
      • don?t show shock so they don?t feel the weight of your reactions
      • the victim will feel a need to protect you if you react strongly
      • show you are able to handle the abuse history that the victim is sharing with you through a healthy detachment

Abuse survivors will try to take care of you and your emotions.

    • ?
      • Your reaction can take the focus off them.
      • Let them know you hear them.
    • Don?t make assumptions about what that was like for them.
    • Compliments are often not well-accepted by survivors.
      • Compliments will probably get a negative response
      • Survivors don?t have sense of self, so it is uncomfortable to hear compliments because it is not how they have seen themselves.
    • Survivors constantly monitor others to see if this is a safe emotional space and person to talk to.
    • Children show symptoms of what is going on in the home (they are the red blinking light letting us know there is abuse in their home).

Messages that are important for victims to receive: You are NOT alone. I? believe you. It?s not your fault. You can call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-SAFE.? Counselors there will listen, and can help you.

Messages that discourage victims of domestic violence from sharing their story or seeking additional health from getting free from an abusive relationship:

    • Did you do anything to provoke the abuse?
    • Why don?t you just leave?
    • You can?t blame others for your problems.
    • All of us have had bad things happen to us.
    • Why can?t you just forget about it?? You need to move on with your life.

The pervasive problem of domestic violence takes everyone to make it stop. If you suspect that someone you know is being abused, keep in mind that expressing your concern for their health and well-being will let the person know that you care and may even save her or his life.

How does the iPhone 5 battery life stack up?

Apple tells us that the iPhone 5 offers "even longer battery life" than any of its predecessors, but what does that really mean? Can the new smartphone keep up ?with ?? or beat ? the competition?

Laptop Mag's Mark Spoonauer conducted some thorough tests while reviewing the iPhone 5, just as he does when checking out other smartphones, to find out.

"Our test goes out and surfs 50 of the most popular websites in succession every 60 seconds," he told me,?in describing the testing procedures Laptop Mag sets up. "It's meant to mimic how people use their phones.?Every minute or so, you might take it out of your pocket and use it."

Apple claims that the iPhone 5 has enough battery power to offer "up to 8 hours of browsing on a cellular connection, up to 8 hours of talk time, and up to 10 hours of video playback time." In?Spoonauer's tests, the device "lasted 7 hours and 13 minutes."

To put that into perspective, consider that the Samsung Galaxy S III, a key?competitor, lasted for six hours and 55 minutes in Laptop Mag's tests. The iPhone 4S lasted five hours and 54 minutes, the HTC One X lasted 5 hours and 59 minutes, the Samsung?Galaxy Nexus lasted 3 hours and 40 minutes. The current champ, when it comes to battery life, is?the Motorola Droid RAZR Maxx, with a battery life of 8 hours and 25 minutes, according to Laptop Mag's tests.

"It simply has a bigger capacity battery," says Spoonauer, referring to the Motorola Droid RAZR Maxx. "At some point physics has to take over." There's only so much that Apple's clever software tweaks can do to boost the life of a rather small battery. Of course a device such as the?Motorola Droid RAZR Maxx stands a chance of outrunning the iPhone 5 thanks to sheer capacity. "It's amazing that it lasts as long as it does, given how small the battery is in comparison to the competition," Spoonauer points out.

"For the [battery] size, I think that the iPhone 5 offers fairly good battery life," he concludes before cautioning that he has seen some complaints about battery life?on Apple-centric forums.?

We put a lot of trust in Spoonauer's quantitative tests, though, and until the anecdotal evidence of poor battery performance is overwhelming, we'll maintain our faith in his assessment. This little gadget seems to last "longer on a charge than most 4G LTE phones."
