Iraqi leader celebrates US withdrawal as new dawn (AP)

BAGHDAD ? Iraq's prime minister hailed the end of the American military presence in Iraq as a new dawn for his country and urged Iraqis to preserve the unity of a nation still under attack by insurgents and beset by sectarian divisions.

At a televised celebration in Baghdad on Saturday, Nouri al-Maliki declared Dec. 31 a national holiday marking "a new dawn" in which Iraq would focus on rebuilding a nation shattered by nearly nine years of war.

"Your country has become free," he said. "The faithful sons of Iraq have to preserve its sovereignty, unity and independence."

The prime minister sought to credit Iraqis with the overthrow of Saddam Hussein and made no mention of the role played by U.S. forces that invaded in March of 2003.

He said the U.S. withdrawal that was completed Dec. 18 was proof of the government's ability to protect the country's sovereignty.

"This success is for all Iraqis and not to a party, an ethnic group or a sect, but all Iraqis are partners in this splendid success," he said.

The prime minister noted the huge losses suffered in a war that killed at least 100,000 Iraqis.

Al-Maliki acknowledged the security threats Iraq still faces and said he was determined to speed up the arming and training of Iraqi security forces.

The battle against terrorism and "the dark forces" is not over, the prime minister said, while adding: "We are confident of victory."

Al-Maliki called on the Iraqi political leaders to work together but he made no mention of the political crisis gripping the country.

Sectarian tensions have surged in recent weeks after al-Maliki's government issued an arrest warrant for the country's top Sunni politician. Al-Maliki is also trying to get rid of his deputy prime minister, also a Sunni, leaving many Sunnis worried that they are being sidelined from power.

There have been other celebrations to mark the end of the U.S. military presence in Iraq. Hundreds of Sunni Muslims rallied on Friday near the Abu Hanifa mosque, the main house of worship in the primarily Sunni neighborhood of Azamiyah in northern Baghdad.

In Basra, the Badr organization, which is part of a key Iraqi Shiite political faction that was founded in Iran, celebrated the occasion by putting posters of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and his predecessor, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, on the walls of government institutions and buildings.

Everyone Must Sacrifice? Obama Plays 90th Round of Golf as President

In January 2009, before the president signed his failed $787 billion stimulus bill into law, Barack Obama lectured America saying,

?Everyone must sacrifice for the greater good? Everyone must have some skin in the game.?

Everyone but Barack and Michelle Obama.

Obama just golfed his 90th round of golf in three years this week.

White House Dossier reported:

After an hour of hiking, President Obama Monday got down to the serious business at hand, heading out to golf for the second day in his first three days of vacation. He was back on the course at Marine Corps Base Hawaii.

With this one, Obama reaches a new milestone, having gone golfing 90 times in less than three years as president. That?s about three months of golf, given that the excursions generally take about five hours ? much of the useful portion of the day.

What?s more, it?s the 32nd time he?s been on the links this year, a record for the president. His 32 outings eclipses the 2010 mark of 30 and is far ahead of his 2009 tally of 28 rounds as president.

Arkansas Schools Desegregation Funds Can't Be Cut Off, Appeals Court Rules

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- Arkansas cannot cut off millions of dollars in funding for desegregation programs in Little Rock-area school districts until the state asks a federal judge for permission to do so, an appeals court ruled Wednesday.

The 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals decision comes after U.S. District Judge Brian Miller ordered an end to most of the payments, calling them counterproductive. He accused the districts of delaying desegregation to keep getting state money.

The appeals court ruled that Miller decided to end the payments without the state specifically asking him to do so. The court said the state must ask, in a separate court action, before a judge could make such a ruling.

A spokesman for Attorney General Dustin McDaniel said Wednesday that no decision has been made about whether the state would file such a request.

Arkansas is required by a 1989 settlement to fund magnet schools, transfers between districts and other programs to support desegregation and keep a racial balance in the North Little Rock, Pulaski County and Little Rock school districts. Those costs currently add up to about $38 million a year, according to the appeals court's ruling.

State lawmakers have long wanted to end the desegregation program funding, though the districts say they're still necessary.

Battles over school desegregation in Little Rock date back to 1957, when nine black teenagers needed the protection of federal troops to integrate Central High School. Little Rock sued the state and its two neighboring districts in 1982, and two years later a judge agreed that the districts hadn't done enough to help the city schools desegregate.

Miller issued his order to end the payments earlier this year, after hearings about whether two of the three school districts in question ? North Little Rock and Pulaski County ? should be declared unitary, or substantially desegregated.

"That came kind of out of the blue," Stephen Jones, the lead attorney for the North Little Rock district, said Wednesday about Miller's ruling.

Miller wrote that the payments should end in order to avoid "an absurd outcome in which the districts are rewarded with extra money from the state if they fail to comply with their desegregation plans and they face having their funds cut by the state if they act in good faith and comply."

But the appeals court said Miller did not make "specific findings of fact" to support his decision.

Miller, who referred to himself as "a middle aged black judge," instead wrote: "After reading the briefs, the transcripts from the various hearings, and the scores of exhibits filed herein, it is very easy to conclude that few if any of the participants in this case have any clue how to effectively educate underprivileged black children."

The appeals court also reversed Miller's decision to deny the North Little Rock district's request to be declared unitary. Miller had denied the request in part because he said the district offered only anecdotal examples of its efforts to recruit black teachers.

The 8th Circuit disagreed, noting that more than 16 percent of the district's educators are black, compared to 9 percent statewide.

Miller didn't return a phone message left at his chambers Wednesday. But he removed himself from the desegregation case earlier this year, saying he could no longer make unbiased decisions after the state took over his hometown's school district in eastern Arkansas.

Jones, the North Little Rock district's lawyer, said he was pleased with the appeals court's decision to deem the district unitary.

"In a sense, it's anticlimactic because I don't think it really changes how we're going to conduct our day-to-day business," he said.

Another federal judge had previously declared the Little Rock district unitary, but Miller refused to declare the Pulaski County district entirely unitary in his May order. The appeals court upheld that part of Miller's ruling, which found the Pulaski County School District lacking in nine areas in which it had to make changes to be considered desegregated.

Wednesday's opinion notes that Miller found the Pulaski County district "has given very little thought, and even less effort to complying with its desegregation plan. Complying with its plan obligations seems to have been an afterthought."

The appeals court "found no reason to disagree" with Miller's conclusion.

The Pulaski County Special School District's lead attorney, Sam Jones, declined to comment Wednesday.

The Little Rock district's lead lawyer, Chris Heller, praised the appeals court's ruling, adding that part of Miller's decision in May "concerned issues that had not been presented to the district court."

McDaniel said in a statement that Arkansas is moving toward ending the legal action surrounding the decades-old desegregation case and in turn, "taking the courts out of the classrooms" in the county.

Guilty plea in muni bond indictments

(AP) ? A politically connected financial firm and its founder have pleaded guilty to taking part in fraud and bid-rigging conspiracies related to the municipal bond business.

The Justice Department said CDR Financial Products Inc. of Beverly Hills, Calif., and owner David Rubin entered guilty pleas Friday in federal court in Manhattan. The department said they acknowledged their roles in schemes designed to win contracts to invest the proceeds of municipal bonds issued by state, county and local governments.

Rubin faces up to 20 years in prison.

Two other CDR executives are scheduled to go on trial in New York next week.

CDR also was investigated for its ties to former New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson and business the company won in that state. No charges grew out of that investigation.

Obama wooing veterans in campaign

(AP) ? President Barack Obama ended one war and is winding down another, bringing home tens of thousands of U.S. troops. Now he wants them to pay him back ? with votes.

"You stood up for America. America needs to stand up for you," Obama told service members returning to Fort Bragg, N.C. from Iraq recently.

Expect to hear that pitch throughout the next year as the president's campaign, mindful that large numbers of veterans and military families live in states crucial to his re-election chances, highlights his efforts to promote jobs and benefits for veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. Republicans, meanwhile, already are countering his record, noting high unemployment among veterans.

The outreach to veterans is part of a larger effort by Obama to build inroads with voting blocs traditionally outside the Democratic umbrella while it tries to reactivate the coalition of women, minorities and young voters who helped propel him to the White House in 2008. Obama's campaign is free to focus on building a diverse base of support for the general election because he faces no primary opponent. His eventual GOP challenger doesn't have that luxury.

While Democrats have traditionally trailed Republicans on defense and national security matters, Obama senses an opening with veterans because he has generally received high marks from voters for his handling of terrorism ? especially after the U.S. raid in May that killed Osama bin Laden ? and in managing the U.S.'s relationships with other countries. A recent AP-GfK poll found that 59 percent of adults felt Obama would keep America safe, a mark that has remained steady throughout 2011.

Exit polls in 2008 showed that Obama received about 44 percent of voters who said they served in the military, while 54 percent voted for Republican John McCain, a former Navy pilot who was a prisoner of war for more than five years during the Vietnam War. Four years earlier, George W. Bush, who sought re-election as the U.S. waged wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, won 57 percent of voters who said they served in the military, compared with 41 percent for Democrat John Kerry.

There are obvious political reasons for Obama's effort.

Several states that will be heavily contested next year have a significant military presence. Florida, home to a number of military installations, has more than 1.6 million veterans, according to the Veterans Administration. Virginia and North Carolina, political battlegrounds that Obama carried in 2008, both have about 800,000 veterans while Colorado, another important state in the Obama re-election calculation, has more than 400,000 veterans.

This year, the playing field in the fight to woo veterans may end up being level if anyone other than Texas Gov. Rick Perry and Texas Rep. Ron Paul ? the only two with military experience in the GOP field ? win the nomination. Obama had no military experience before becoming commander in chief. (The last time both parties didn't have a presidential candidate with military experience was 1944, when President Franklin D. Roosevelt defeated Thomas E. Dewey.)

As the nation winds down wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, Obama and first lady Michelle Obama have held numerous events at military bases and in communities heavily populated by veterans. During a bus tour through North Carolina and Virginia in October, the president and first lady stopped at Joint Base Langley-Eustis in the heart of a large military community in Hampton and Newport News, Va. Since entering the White House, the first lady has held about 50 events with military families in 14 states.

Obama also has talked up his work on a new GI Bill helping veterans and service members to attend college and on tax incentives for companies that hire veterans, a piece of his jobs bill that won passage in Congress during the fall. The Democratic National Committee featured the incentives in ads that aired in North Carolina, New Mexico and Ohio.

Bob Wallace, executive director of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, said Obama has been "very positive" for veterans. He said members of his organization are looking for specific ways the next White House administration ? Democrat or Republican ? intends to help veterans.

"The cost of war continues after the last shot is fired and after you pull the trucks over the border into Kuwait," Wallace said. "You've got a lot of expenses to take care of these guys and gals and that's the commitment we're looking for anybody who wants to be president of the United States."

Republicans challenge Obama's record on veterans' issues by pointing to high jobless rates among those returning from military service ? more than 11 percent for veterans who have served since the Sept. 11, 2011, attacks are unemployed. Republican presidential candidates also have raised concerns about defense spending and the move by Obama to withdraw troops from Iraq and Afghanistan.

Scott Rutter, a retired Army lieutenant colonel from New City, N.Y., who serves as a veterans policy adviser to former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney's campaign, said many veterans are concerned about their job prospects after leaving the military along with a disability claims backlog that can leave a veteran waiting months or even years to get a claim processed.

"We need leadership. You've got to put a little do-ah in the hooah," Rutter said. "You can talk about it but you have to have results."

Surrounding Obama's trip to Fort Bragg, Romney wrote in an op-ed in The Fayetteville Observer that "words of welcome to our returning soldiers are not enough," calling it "a disgrace that those who are now returning from Iraq join other Iraq veterans suffering from unemployment above 11 percent." And in an October speech at The Citadel, South Carolina's military college, Romney vowed to increase defense spending and increase the number of Navy ships.

Perry, running behind in early voting states, has increasingly drawn attention to his military credentials, running ads featuring decorated veterans touting his leadership abilities. He has criticized Obama for troop withdrawals from Iraq and Afghanistan. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, meanwhile, has opposed defense cuts except for waste.

Paul, who served as an Air Force physician during the Vietnam era, has opposed efforts to require military retirees to pay more for health care coverage. Both parties have discussed cost-cutting changes to the military's health care program to help deal with large deficits.

Italian who fought for votes for emigres dies (AP)

ROME ? Mirko Tremaglia, a right-wing politician who won a decades-long battle for the right of Italian emigres to vote in Italian elections, died on Friday. He was 85.

Italian news agencies and Sky TG24 TV said Tremaglia died at home in Bergamo, northern Italy, after a long illness.

Tremaglia was a co-founder of the Italian Social Movement, a neo-fascist party built on the ashes of Benito Mussolini's political legacy. But he gradually moved toward what is now Italy's center-right ? first as a leader of the National Alliance and then as a prominent member of Silvio Berlusconi's conservatives ? before breaking with the media mogul in 2010 to defect to a new center-right party.

In a condolence message to Tremaglia's family, President Napolitano, a former Communist, noted that the late lawmaker and himself had "different experiences" and ideological positions but they shared a "sense of national responsibility."

"Particularly strong remains the mark of his commitment to give voice and representation to Italians abroad," Napolitano said.

Tremaglia campaigned tirelessly in Parliament for rights for millions of Italians who had emigrated, or who were born to emigre parents, to cast ballots in Italian elections. His dream became law in 2001, the same year he became minister for Italians abroad, in one of Berlusconi's governments.

In spring 2006, campaigning for Berlusconi in parliamentary elections, Tremaglia energetically worked the crowds in South America, where many of the 3.5 million Italian voters abroad lived. The law also gave Italian emigres the right, for the first time, to have representation in Parliament.

Tremaglia had served as a lawmaker in Parliament's lower chamber, the Chamber of Deputies, since 1972. Chamber President Gianfranco Fini, himself a former neo-fascist leader and former Berlusconi ally, hailed Tremaglia in a tribute Friday, as a "great political and personal friend."

Fini called Tremaglia a "great protagonist of the Italian right ? a cause to which Tremaglia, right to the end, dedicated himself with coherence and loyalty."

Fini's defection, along with several lawmakers like Tremaglia, from Berlusconi's coalition after nasty bickering in 2010, weakened the premier's government. Berlusconi resigned in November amid criticism over his handling of Italy's financial crisis.

In 2004, as a minister in then-premier Berlusconi's government, Tremaglia caused uproar when he complained about what he called the influence of gays in the European Union and used a pejorative term for homosexuals in remarks carried by Italian media.

Tremaglia was commenting on a European Parliament committee's decision not to endorse an Italian nominee to become EU justice minister after the candidate, a former Christian Democrat with close ties to the Vatican, testified that he considered homosexuality a sin.

U.S., South Korean defense chiefs discuss regional stability (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and his South Korean counterpart discussed the stability of the Korean peninsula on Thursday, the day after North Korea mourned the death of its long-time leader Kim Jong-il.

Pentagon Press Secretary George Little said Panetta spoke with South Korean Defense Minister Kim Kwan-jin for 20 minutes.

"The Secretary and the Minister shared the view that peace and stability on the Korean peninsula is our overarching priority and agreed to maintain close cooperation and coordination in the weeks and months ahead," Little said in a statement.

Around 100,000 people gathered in Pyongyang on Wednesday to mourn the former North Korean leader, who died on December 17.

As his son Kim Jong-un, in his late 20s, takes over, worries abound about the direction and the stability of the unpredictable, nuclear-armed state, especially among U.S. allies such as South Korea.

U.K. Charity Preps $25-$35 PCs For Early 2012 Launch (NewsFactor)

A high-tech charity based in the United Kingdom is prepping two models of a credit-card-sized PC that will be available for purchase early next year for $25 and $35, respectively.

Among other things, the cheap price and lower power requirements of the new devices from the Raspberry Pi organization promise to make it less worrisome for parents everywhere to permit their children to tinker with the innards of a fully capable computing machine.

One major organization goal is to provide developing countries with an affordable means of deploying inexpensive computing devices in areas where the cost, power and hardware requirements of traditional desktop machines are prohibitive obstacles.

"We want to see cheap, accessible, programmable computers everywhere," the Raspberry Pi development team said.

What's more, the new Raspberry Pi machines will provide children as well as adult hobbyists with a platform for compiling and running home-grown software apps without risking the family's significantly more expensive machines.

At the outset, the tiny machine will run the ArchLinux, Debian and Fedora distributions of ARM GNU/Linux, which users will be able to purchase on preloaded SD cards sold separately.

"We want owning a truly personal computer to be normal for children," the Raspberry Pi development team said. "We think that 2012 is going to be a very exciting year."

A Multimedia Powerhouse

Don't be fooled by the device's tiny footprint and low cost. Raspberry Pi is fully capable of rendering Blu-ray-quality, 1080p video playback. What's more, the machine integrates the requisite hardware-accelerated graphics capabilities for supporting imaging, a camcorder, streaming media and 3D gaming.

At the heart of the diminutive device is Broadcom's BCM2835 system on a chip, which features a standard ARM v6 core running at 700MHz. Also aboard is Broadcom's dual-core Videocore IV multimedia co-processor and Videocore graphics processor unit. Additionally, the tiny PC board integrates a RAM chip as well as an SD card slot.

With respect to connecting to peripherals, Raspberry Pi sports composite video and HDMI outputs that will enable experimenters to use either a digital or analog television as a display. Moreover, a USB port supplies the connection for a hub to which users can attach a USB keyboard, mouse and other peripherals.

Though a Wi-Fi radio is not aboard the device itself, users will be able to add wireless capabilities by plugging in a USB dongle. Additionally, the $35 model includes a standard 10/100 wired Ethernet port.

The Raspberry Pi will initially ship without a case, though the U.K. charity expects to offer one later on. The 5-volt power supply, which connects to the board via the USB port, will be sold separately.

An Opportunity For Hobbyists

The Raspberry Pi is also expected to provide adult hobbyists with a basic platform for experimentation even as ARM chip architectures make forays over time through the sheer weight of the diversity of the chip ecosystems being designed today, noted Al Hilwa, director of applications software at IDC.

"As systems trend towards further miniaturization, they will inevitably grow lower in cost," Hilwa said. "It is not inconceivable to have PC functionality shift to phone CPUs as these chips ramp up in cores and gigahertz, but this scenario is at least five years away from mainstreaming."

In the meantime, Hilwa believes there will likely be a renaissance for Linux systems such as the ArchLinux, Debian and Fedora distributions of ARM GNU/Linux that will be supplied for the Raspberry Pi at the outset.

This will especially be the case "for hobbyists who will be increasingly cut out of mainstream platforms because of their tight control through app stores and restricted programming models," Hilwa said.

Cops: Dad planned massacre in Santa suit

By NBCDFW.com

A father dressed as Santa?Claus arrived to his family's Christmas party with two guns, executed his entire family and then killed himself -- and planned the entire thing, police said Tuesday.

Police believe the Christmas Day massacre in Grapevine, Texas, which left seven people dead still surrounded by Christmas presents and wrapping paper, was premeditated, Grapevine Police Sgt. Robert Eberling said.

Late Tuesday afternoon, Grapevine police officially released the name of the gunman and his?victims.

Police confirm what family friends said Monday, that Azizolah "Bob" Yazdanpanah, 56, fired the fatal shots in the murder-suicide.

Grapevine police identified the victims as his wife, Fatemah "Nasrin" Rahmati, 55; their daughter, Nargis "Nona" Yazdanpanah, 19; and their son, Ali Yazdanpanah, 14. Nasrin's sister, Zohreh Rahmati, 58; her husband, Mohamad Hossein Zarei, 59; and their daughter, Sahra Fatemah Zarei, 22; were also killed, police confirmed.

Police received a 911 call from an apartment in the 2500 block of Hall Johnson Road on Christmas morning. When officers arrived, they found the door locked from the inside, and the worst crime in Grapevine history.

Police recovered two weapons on the scene -- a Smith and Wesson 915 model 9 mm pistol with a 15-round magazine, and a Glock 23 .40-caliber pistol with a 10-round clip, according to Eberling.

Both guns were used in the murder-suicide, but Eberling would not say how many shots were fired; only saying that there were still bullets in both guns.

Last year, a bank foreclosed on Bob Yazdanpanah's house, and he separated from his wife in the March.

Police had previously said a text message prior to the shooting indicated Bob Yazdanpanah was probably invited to the party, but police on Tuesday afternoon changed their story.

Police now say Bob Yazdanpanah apparently was not invited.

At 11:16 a.m., one of the victims sent a text message to a friend indicating who was at the gathering at the apartment. The text message mentioned the gunman's name and that he was dressed as Santa. Police said there was no indication of fear or concern in the text.

Eighteen minutes later, someone placed a call to 911 from a landline inside the apartment.? Investigators could make out a muffled cry for help in the background, Eberling said.

All of the victims were found in the same room with no sign of a struggle, according to Eberling, but he said some of the victims had defensive wounds that indicate they tried to shield themselves from the bullets.

Police will wait for the Tarrant County Medical Examiner to release the identities of the victims,? Eberling said.

The gunman had some prior dealings with at least two other police departments but not Grapevine Police, according to Eberling. He did not say what kind of dealings, or when or how many incidents there were.

Investigators are still piecing together information, but Eberling said they aren't sure of a motive and may never know what led to the worst crime in Grapevine history.

Friends paint picture of loving family in turmoil
Yazdanpanah married Fatemah "Nasrin" Rahmati in 1987, according to court records. They had a daughter, Nargis "Nona," 19, who graduated from Colleyville Heritage High School in May and a son, Ali, 15, a high school freshman. All four are believed to be among the dead.

Neighbors say the family seemed tight-knit, and Aziz Yazdanpanah seemed protective of his children.

"He was pretty outgoing," said neighbor Fred Ditmars. "If you saw him, he'd say 'hi' to you and everything."

"It seemed like their whole existence was about family, so it's utterly shocking to me," said another neighbor, Terri Baum, whose daughter attended school with his daughter.

A close friend of the Yazdanpanah family said Fatemah "Nasrin" Rahmati's sister Zohreh, her husband Hossein Zarei and their 22-year-old daughter Sahra were also killed.

Sahra (pictured left in blue) was a pre-med student at the University of Texas at Arlington, and according to family friends she was a part of the Tri Delta sorority at UTA.

"Bob loved his kids. And I can't even fathom that that's what happened," Baum said.

The mother, Fatemah "Nasrin" Rahmati, worked the past four years doing manicures at a salon on Southlake's town square. The manager said she often talked about her family, but never in a bad way.

Police cautioned the investigation is far from over.

New This Week

?For those underwhelmed by the ?Arrested Development? reunion at Fox?s ?Running Wilde? last fall, the good news is there?s a second reunification of ?Development? brothers-in-law David Cross and Will Arnett this fall via an IFC sitcom titled
?The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret.?

It?s about a weak-minded temp (Cross) who unexpectedly finds himself dispatched by his half-wit of a new boss (Arnett) to market to the British a vile Korean energy drink called Thunder Muscle. While ?Wilde? is masterminded by Arnett and ?Arrested? creator Mitch Hurwitz, ?Margaret? was co-created by Cross, whose earlier endeavors as a screenwriter include HBO?s ?Mr. Show? and Comedy Central?s animated ?Freak Show.?

I believe Cross one of the funniest comics alive, but not every stand-up transitions to other media as brilliantly as did Woody Allen and Albert Brooks. ?Mr. Show,? a sketch franchise, deserves its following.

?Freak Show? a bit more of a sitcom, was a bit less of a laugh generator. ?Margaret? again demonstrates that writing situation comedies ? even TV-MA ones ? may not be Cross? strongest suit. Todd Margaret is a mammoth boob, smart enough to recognize a good job when it lands in his lap, but too stupid to realize locking his cat in his apartment for a month with a giant dish of tuna and a bucket of water is not preferable to boarding the pet. (Margaret?s new salary is $120,000 annually so he really should have been able to swing that expense.)

Margaret also knows somehow that Leeds is a municipality in England -- but doesn?t know The Who didn?t play there every Saturday.

The character of Todd Margaret, like a lot of sitcom characters, doesn?t always make a lot of sense. Margaret is assigned a cruel and unpleasant young British assistant who seems to take great joy in exploring just how dim his new boss is.

The series is repetitive and often wearing, determined to make the point over and over that Margaret has not much of an intellect. The set pieces that demonstrate this almost always overstay their welcome.?

But it?s not all bad. The thousands of boxes of the energy drink shipped to Margaret?s London office from Korea are labeled ?Bad Sanitation!? I also enjoyed checking in with Margaret?s cat at the end of each episode. American guest stars on the series include Amber Tamblyn and Janeane Garofalo.

Variety says:

Despite the promising talent and amusing title, the poorest decision pertaining to "The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret" was the one to greenlight it. ? it's a very one-note joke, adding a second creative disappointment (the other being Fox's "Running Wilde") to this fall's Cross-Will Arnett team-ups ? A more fundamental problem lies with Cross, whose mixture of wide-eyed innocent/ugly American/myopic moron has no nuance to engender even a trace of sympathy for his plight. And haven't we seen Arnett play the same blowhard over and over again, to the point of becoming tiresome? ?

The New York Times says:

? though it has moments of sublime satire and a typically memorable performance from Mr. Cross?s ?Arrested Development? colleague Will Arnett, it still has the feel of a dish that has been sitting on the table well past the point of cooling. ? all about its own ad-hoc lunacy, and yet it holds up as a pretty funny take on American corporate arrogance and as a symbol of the shift the workplace comedy has taken in recent years from an emphasis on relationships toward illustrations of dopey mismanagement. ?

The Los Angeles Times says:

? not altogether successful ? His attempts to speak the local lingo ? "Hello, hello, if I could have a wee minute of a brief spot tinkling of your time" ? are as strained as his conversations with women, where he is both elaborately courteous and helplessly gross. ? This is fun at first, but it becomes tiring to see him continually swatted down. It isn't until the glimmer of a plot finally emerges, after Todd stumbles into a Middle Eastern market with a can of Thunder Muscle, eliciting sudden mysterious interest ? that the series inches past mere mockery to the promise of more muscular misadventure. ?

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette says:

? by far the funnier of the two David Cross-Will Arnett series airing this fall ? He's an idiot (after he hears a British waitress say "raison d'etre," he says, "Aww, I love raisins") but the situations are pretty funny and hilariously profane whenever Arnett is on screen. ?

The Boston Globe says:

? It?s not must-see, but worth a half-hour, if you like Cross. ?

A new Showtime drama about the family of the rich, lusty fellow who ?ascended? to the Papacy around the time Columbus ?discovered? America, ?The Borgias? was written and directed by Neil Jordan (?The Crying Game,? ?Interview With The Vampire,? ?The Brave One?) and stars Jeremy Irons (?Brideshead Revisited,? ?Reversal of Fortune,? ?Die Hard With A Vengeance?), Joanne Whalley (?Willow,? ?Scarlett,? ?Jackie Bouvier Kennedy Onassis?), Colm Feore (?24,? ?Thor?) and Derek Jacobi (?I, Claudius,? ?The King?s Speech?).

It lacks the full-bodied characterizations that made ?Rome,? set 1,500 years earlier in the same general locale, such a ripping yarn.

I think Jordan means to shock us with these tales of a ruthless, fornicating Pope, but the papers now so bulge with tales of Christian clergy availing themselves of pre-teen genitalia, the idea of a power-driven, mistress-indulging Vicar of Christ is rendered almost quaint.

I will say Irons is fun to watch, but the series drags during the stretches that too often pull him offscreen.

Time says:

? a lavish but joyless affair. Maybe in this kind of drama, trying to be too good is the cardinal sin. ?

The New York Times says:

? Jeremy Irons plays the ruthless head of the Borgia clan with almost campy relish. It may the most villainous fun he has had on screen since he played Claus von B?low in ?Reversal of Fortune? ?

The Los Angeles Times says:

? though Jordan has worked to make the Borgias understandable in human terms, it's hard to deeply care for them ? it doesn't matter, finally, what becomes of them, we watch less in suspense than in wonder: wonder at the cheek and gall of these characters; wondering how true any of it is; and wondering, most profitably, at the performances, the least of which are good and the best of which are good fun. That, more than the story ? which, notwithstanding the curlicues of palace intrigue, is in broad strokes easy to anticipate, so clear are everyone's intentions and options ? is what makes "The Borgias" worth your while. ?

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette says:

? a bit pell-mell and almost cartoon-like ? has a somewhat talky, two-hour premiere Sunday night, but it also moves through history at so fast a clip that character motivation is sacrificed. Borgia is crowned pope within the first hour, but the show never bothers to show viewers why, power grab aside, he wants it so badly. Also, he appears to take a mistress within hours of becoming pope when a young woman shows up from seemingly out of nowhere.

HitFix says:

? tiresome ? the ongoing identity crisis of "Camelot" is a tiny bit more entertaining than the more consistent tedium of "The Borgias," which tells the tale of the infamous 15th century Spanish family, whose patriarch Rodrigo became one of history's most controversial popes. That show has a more impressive pedigree - created by "The Crying Game" director Neil Jordan, and starring Jeremy Irons as Rodrigo - yet it would be hard to imagine a Hirst-penned version being any different, and Irons seems surprisingly bored by the whole project ?

TV Squad says:

? has Jeremy Irons' steely portrayal at its core, and his velvety magnetism allows the viewer to pardon quite a few of this period drama's lesser sins (even if a few serious sins remain). ?

The Boston Herald says:

The name alone conjures up images of depravity and debauchery. So why is ?The Borgias? so dreary??

The Boston Globe says:

? Irons doesn?t bring a lot of nuance to the role, but he nonetheless manages to balance his monster with a hint of godliness and a passion for diversity. But still, the story lines in ?The Borgias?? are terribly flat. ? has all the surface requirements you?d expect from a prestige production. Now all it needs is a beating heart.

USA Today says:

? captured by a sterling cast led in marvelous high style by Jeremy Irons, and presented with all the brio, flair and sumptuous design TV can muster, the infamous family is almost addictively entertaining. ?

The Hollywood Reporter says:

? The fact is, these kinds of grand historical reimaginings can be a scrumptious combination of costume drama acting, soap opera theatrics and pay cable promiscuousness. That?ll make the hours fly by. And it doesn?t mean your pleasure needs to be all that guilty.
?

?Shameless,? Showtime?s American version of a long-running British series, follows the scam-happy family of a hard-drinking, welfare-squandering patriarch. John Wells (?ER?) and John Abbott (?State Of Play?) handle scripting for the American version.

It stars Emmy Rossum (?The Phantom of the Opera?), William H. Macy (?Wild Hogs?), Joan Cusack (?What About Joan?), Joel Murray (?Mad Men?) and Marguerite Moreau (?Parenthood?).

The series is certainly better than its promos let on, though Macy really does chew too energetically on scenery. Happily the pilot puts a lot more focus on the sexy Rossum, who is fetching parading around in her undies in the second scene and indulges some Showtime-style nudity before the pilot?s 20-minute mark.

Some of it is a little predictable; a lot of it is too cute. The photography and direction are strong, as is a lot of the acting. It?s more entertaining on the whole than Wells? ?Southland? over on TNT if that?s any measure.

The critics are all over the place:

?The New York Times says:

? surprisingly appealing, crude, funny and also touching ?

The Los Angeles Times says:

? strangely unlikable ? seems determined to knock viewers on the head by turns with sledgehammers of grittiness and preachiness, never a good combination. ?

The Washington Post says:

? one of the best things I've watched on TV in many months. ? The last dysfunctional family drama I can recall getting off to such a good start was "Six Feet Under," with which "Shameless" shares a certain vibe. ?

The San Francsico Chronicle says:

? Not only is there honor among the members of the nimble-witted Gallagher family on Showtime's "Shameless," but a lot of love, smart writing and simply extraordinary performances ? In its own, yes, quirky way, "Shameless" is irresistibly heartwarming. It's also great television. ?

TV Squad says:

? the family's scams, adventures and predicaments are interesting enough to keep things perking along, though the episodes occasionally feel a bit long (their running time is generally around 52 or 53 minutes). The danger of a sprawling ensemble show is that there are sometimes too many characters to service adequately. Not all of them pull their weight here, but most are at least mildly interesting. Still, if there isn't a season-long arc to pull us in, establishing empathy for a few central characters is even more important. ?

The Boston Herald says:

? a remake of an inexplicably popular British series ? Joan Cusack wastes her talents as a tightly wound neighbor who doesn?t realize what her teenage daughter is doing just inches away from her. ?

USA Today says:

? For all the show's flaws, you can see the attraction for an actor of Macy's quality, with the kind of showy, outsized role that wins awards. But as fine an actor as he is, Frank just comes across as loud and empty. Much like Shameless.

The Hollywood Reporter says:

? excellent, compelling television from the first moment. As long as it stays true to the roots of the original, it's going to be essential viewing.

Variety says:

? wallows in dreariness without offering enough dramatic compensation in return. ? For the most part, there's nothing here to be ashamed of. It's just that at a time when TV drama is so flush with riches, "Shameless" plays like a poor relative. ?
