When Moammar Gadhafi came to New York for a meeting of the United Nations in 2009, he planned to pitch his Bedouin tent in Central Park. Rebuffed, he tried a few more locales - -- even resorting to trickery - -- before caving in and renting a hotel room.
News stories about Gadhafi in his native Libya often referred to meetings in the notorious leader's tent. But Gadhafi didn't live in a tent; he had an official residence as well.
Here are some of the stories about Gadhafi and his famous -- or, to some, infamous -- tents:
Crush on Condi
New York magazine reports from an advance copy from Condaleeza Rice's memoir that Gadhafi had a crush on the former Secretary of State. She said he had an "eerie fascination" with her. He called her his "darling black African woman." Gadhafi wanted to meet alone with Rice in his tent but she declined.
Tent Ambiance
While Gadhafi frequently traveled with his tents, in 2007 he also brought along a camel when he went to Paris to provide visitors traditional ambiance. He said he wanted to "greet visitors in the true desert tradition."
Gadhafi's tents were made from hand-spun and woven goat hair.
Time Photo Gallery
Wondering how a country's leader could conduct business in a tent? Time put together a photo essay showing the insides of Gadhafi's tents. The tents are roomy and colorfully decorated. The photo captions describe some of the many meetings the Libyan leader held in his various Bedouin-style tents. In one meeting with a European leader, Gadhafi brought in western-style armchairs for seating.
Libyan Reactions to Leader with Traveling Tent
At least some Libyans were not enthusiastic about their leader traveling with a tent.
"When we traveled, we stopped saying we're Libyans because everyone on the outside thought we dress in drapes and live in tents." Tripoli University student Amal Emsaed said earlier this month.
"Every time he wanted to open his mouth or drag his tent somewhere, we'd say, 'No God, please don't let him do it,'" Sondes el Saidi, another student, said. "? We're laughing about him these days, but, my God, it was embarrassing."
