New iPhone apps worth downloading: Craftsy & Polara

Here are a couple of iPhone apps to enjoy. Craftsy is an app that offers all the features of the popular website directly to your iPad. Now you can keep up on your video-based craft classes wherever you may be. We?ve also got Polara, an endless horizontal runner with some interesting twists and plenty of challenge.

Craftsy (Free, iPad only)

What?s it about? Craftsy offers a huge selection of online video-based craft classes and now that content is available via its dedicated iPad app.

What?s cool? There are video-based, interactive online classes for quilting, knitting, sewing, cake decorating, jewelry making, food, photography, gardening, and many other passions. You can take crafty classes anytime you want because they?re always accessible online. Videos feature professional teachers and the costs are easily affordable compared to a real-world course. It?s easy to ask questions and videos can be rewatched time and time again.

Who is it for? Craftsy is hugely popular with 500,000 class enrollments already. The iPad app will be very welcome because of how portable the device is and how well it works as a learning tool. The app is great for people who?ve never used the website, too.

What?s it like? There are a few craft-based apps out there, but they?re more about ideas than lessons. Still, check out craftgawker for inspiration and Etsy for real stuff you can actually buy.

Polara ($0.99)

What?s it about? Polara is an action-packed free-running title which incorporates traditional challenging gameplay with color-switching strategy.

What?s cool? You need to use color coded speed ramps, launching pads, gravity waves, hex bombs and energy platforms to survive while you escape the clutches of an evil security system. There are 50 unique and challenging story-based levels along with four major boss battles.

Who is it for? Polara is great for fans of endless runners of course, but completionists will also appreciate it. That?s because even after you finish the story mode, there are plenty of endless modes to unlock which gives it a lot of replay value. It packs plenty of challenge plus some great artwork and level design.

What?s it like? Polara resembles some other horizontal runners like Canabalt but with a bit more depth. It was likely inspired by Outland, an Xbox LIVE classic, and has elements of Gravity Guy to it as well.
