Treasure Island Fire: Ten-Year-Old Girl Dies In Two-Alarm Blaze

SAN FRANCISCO -- A 10-year-old girl was killed early Saturday morning as a raging two-alarm fire spread through an apartment building on Treasure Island.

Two firefighters suffered non-life threatening injured when a second-story floor collapsed beneath them during their rescue efforts. One firefighter was taken to a hospital, and one was checked and released at the scene.

The fire was reported about 12:15 a.m. at an apartment building in the 1200 block of Mariner Drive, according to Assistant Chief Dave Franklin of the San Francisco Fire Department. Multiple callers told 911 dispatchers while crews were en route that people might still have been trapped inside the building, Franklin said.

Firefighters arriving at the scene found the building fully engulfed, with fire and smoke pouring out of windows and doors on both floors, he said. Crews attacked the fire from all sides while attempting to find anyone still inside the building.

During the rescue, firefighters found the girl, who had succumbed to her injuries, Franklin said. Her identity was not released.

The fire was under control by about 1:30 a.m., Franklin said. Investigators are still assessing the damage and investigating the cause.

Red Cross volunteers came to the scene to help find temporary housing for those displaced by the fire.
