The annual war on Thanksgiving conducted by PETA, an animal rights group that opposes the eating of meat, has hit the town of Turkey, Texas. The 500 or so residents of the sleepy town in the Texas Panhandle are not amused.
What exactly does PETA want Turkey, Texas, to do?
According to todaysthv.com, PETA is demanding that Turkey, Texas, change its name to "Tofurky, Texas," after the tofu dish that PETA has pushed as a alternative to the traditional Thanksgiving dish of turkey and all of the trimmings. If Turkey, Texas, does this, PETA will offer the 500 or so good people of the town a vegetarian Thanksgiving feast. It is not known whether PETA means this to be an incentive or a threat.
What is Turkey, Texas?
Turkey, Texas, was founded in the 1890s under the name "Turkey Creek." The creek was so named because of the abundance of wild game, including turkeys, in the area. The name was shortened to Turkey when the town acquired a post office 1893.
The town is best known as the home town of Bob Willis, the "King of Western Swing," who founded a band called "The Texas Playboys" in the 1920s. Turkey is primarily an agricultural community, with neighboring farms growing cotton, watermelons, peanuts, and sweet potatoes, the latter of which are especially prized.
The main attractions of Turkey, Texas, are the Gem Theater, where Willis and his band used to perform, and the Midway Drive In, one of the last drive-in theaters in the country, open between Memorial Day and Labor Day.
Why is PETA picking on Turkey, Texas?
It's likely publicity. PETA gets its name in the media by targeting people for eating meat or wearing fur. Targets have included President Obama, for killing a fly on national TV, Sarah Palin, for killing a caribou on her show "Sarah Palin's Alaska," and Prince Henry of Great Britain for eating a meat lover's pizza. PETA has opened a porn site to advertise veganism and has advocated a vegan Mars colony, in the process pestering commercial space pioneer Elon Musk.
What did the people in Turkey do to deserve this?
They didn't do anything. It is just their turn. However, by all accounts they are rather insulted.
What are the folks proposing to do about it?
One proposal is to create a sign that says, "Don't Mess with Turkey, Texas." This is a takeoff on the unofficial slogan of the state, "Don't Mess With Texas."
