Congratulations to District 308 Superintendent and Washington Community High School Principal Jim Dunnan, whose proposals to raise the academic eligibility standards for students who participate in Illinois High School Association-sponsored activities passed decisively in the IHSA?s annual referendum ballot.
Starting July 1, students must be passing five classes per week and per semester to stay eligible. The current minimums, which have been in effect since the late 1980?s, are four classes. A physical education class can be counted as one of the five classes passed even if a school doesn?t give credit for P.E. And incoming freshman are exempt, obviously, from the semester requirement.
The new academic standards are needed because it?s currently possible at some high schools for a student to be eligible for IHSA activities for four years but not have enough credits to graduate. And, frankly, there?s nothing wrong with challenging students to do better in the classroom. Most students take five or six classes per semester.
All 14 proposals on the referendum ballot passed. For the details, go to the IHSA website at www.ihsa.org and check out the IHSA Headlines link on the front page.
The IHSA announced the vote totals Thursday. Dunnan?s ?per week? Proposal 7 passed 309-189, and ?per semester?? Proposal 8 passed 304-195. The closest vote among the 14 proposals was Proposal 1, which passed 261-239. It allows a private school with an enrollment of 200 or less (before the 1.65 multiplier is applied) to be part of a cooperative team.
