Attempts to revive language spoken in Jesus' time

JISH, Israel (AP) ? Two villages in the Holy Land's tiny Christian community are teaching Aramaic in an ambitious effort to revive the language that Jesus spoke, centuries after it all but disappeared from the Middle East.

The new focus on the region's dominant language 2,000 years ago comes with a little help from modern technology: an Aramaic-speaking television channel from Sweden, of all places, where a vibrant immigrant community has kept the ancient tongue alive.

In the Palestinian village of Beit Jala, an older generation of Aramaic speakers is trying to share the language with their grandchildren. Beit Jala lies next to Bethlehem, where the New Testament says Jesus was born.

And in the Arab-Israeli village of Jish, nestled in the Galilean hills where Jesus lived and preached, elementary school children are now being instructed in Aramaic. The children belong mostly to the Maronite Christian community. Maronites still chant their liturgy in Aramaic but few understand the prayers.

"We want to speak the language that Jesus spoke," said Carla Hadad, a 10-year-old Jish girl who frequently waved her arms to answer questions in Aramaic from school teacher Mona Issa during a recent lesson.

"We used to speak it a long time ago," she added, referring to her ancestors.

During the lesson, a dozen children lisped out a Christian prayer in Aramaic. They learned the words for "elephant," ''how are you?" and "mountain." Some children carefully drew sharp-angled Aramaic letters. Others fiddled with their pencil cases, which sported images of popular soccer teams.

The dialect taught in Jish and Beit Jala is "Syriac," which was spoken by their Christian forefathers and resembles the Galilean dialect that Jesus would have used, according to Steven Fassberg, an Aramaic expert at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem.

"They probably would have understood each other," Fassberg said.

In Jish, about 80 children in grades one through five study Aramaic as a voluntary subject for two hours a week. Israel's education ministry provided funds to add classes until the eighth grade, said principal Reem Khatieb-Zuabi.

Several Jish residents lobbied for Aramaic studies several years ago, said Khatieb-Zuabi, but the idea faced resistance: Jish's Muslims worried it was a covert attempt to entice their children to Christianity. Some Christians objected, saying the emphasis on their ancestral language was being used to strip them of their Arab identity. The issue is sensitive to many Arab Muslims and Christians in Israel, who prefer to be identified by their ethnicity, not their faith.

Ultimately, Khatieb-Zuabi, a secular Muslim from an outside village, overruled them.

"This is our collective heritage and culture. We should celebrate and study it," the principal said. And so the Jish Elementary School become the only Israeli public school teaching Aramaic, according to the education ministry.

Their efforts are mirrored in Beit Jala's Mar Afram school run by the Syrian Orthodox church and located just a few miles (kilometers) from Bethlehem's Manger Square.

There, priests have taught the language to their 320 students for the past five years.

Some 360 families in the area descend from Aramaic-speaking refugees who in the 1920s fled the Tur Abdin region of what is now Turkey.

Priest Butros Nimeh said elders still speak the language but that it vanished among younger generations. Nimeh said they hoped teaching the language would help the children appreciate their roots.

Although both the Syrian Orthodox and Maronite church worship in Aramaic, they are distinctly different sects.

The Maronites are the dominant Christian church in neighboring Lebanon but make up only a few thousand of the Holy Land's 210,000 Christians. Likewise, Syrian Orthodox Christians number no more than 2,000 in the Holy Land, said Nimeh. Overall, some 150,000 Christians live in Israel and another 60,000 live in the West Bank.

Both schools found inspiration and assistance in an unlikely place: Sweden. There, Aramaic-speaking communities who descended from the Middle East have sought to keep their language alive.

They publish a newspaper, "Bahro Suryoyo," pamphlets and children's books, including "The Little Prince," and maintain a satellite television station, "Soryoyosat," said Arzu Alan, chairwoman of the Syriac Aramaic Federation of Sweden.

There's also an Aramaic soccer team, "Syrianska FC" in the Swedish top division from the town of Sodertalje. Officials estimate the Aramaic-speaking population at anywhere from 30,000 to 80,000 people.

For many Maronites and Syrian Orthodox Christians in the Holy Land, the television station, in particular, was the first time they heard the language outside church in decades. Hearing it in a modern context inspired them to try revive the language among their communities.

"When you hear (the language), you can speak it," said Issa, the teacher.

Aramaic dialects were the region's vernacular from 2,500 years ago until the sixth century, when Arabic, the language of conquering Muslims from the Arabian Peninsula, became dominant, according to Fassberg.

Linguistic islands survived: Maronites clung to Aramaic liturgy and so did the Syrian Orthodox church. Kurdish Jews on the river island of Zakho spoke an Aramaic dialect called "Targum" until fleeing to Israel in the 1950s. Three Christian villages in Syria still speak an Aramaic dialect, Fassberg said.

With few opportunities to practice the ancient tongue, teachers in Jish have tempered expectations. They hope they can at least revive an understanding of the language.

The steep challenges are seen in the Jish school, where the fourth-grade Aramaic class has just a dozen students. The number used to be twice that until they introduced an art class during the same time slot ? and lost half their students.

A satiric adaptation of a 1970s soap opera and a big-budget action flick based on a board game tried and failed. Ultimately, it was another franchise with comic book roots that ended the nearly month-long reign of "The Avengers" at the top of the box office, as "Men in Black 3" became the #1 movie in America with an estimated $70 million debut over the four-day Memorial Day weekend.

The third entry in the Will Smith/ Tommy Lee Jones franchise, based on a short-lived comic series from the early 1990s, took in another $133.2 million overseas, giving it a worldwide total of $203.2 million. Box-office prognosticators had predicted a somewhat stronger opening for the 3-D film, which carried a reported production budget near $250 million. Enthusiasm and nostalgia for the 1997 original, about a pair of criminal-alien-busting special agents, remains high. But the 2002 sequel was poorly received by critics, who were a bit kinder to "MIB 3," which added Josh Brolin as a younger version of Jones' character in time-travel scenes. The first "Men in Black" made $589 million around the world. Its follow-up trailed behind with $442 million. The opening weekend for "MIB 3" wasn't far off from "MIB 2."

Will Smith, top-billed in hits like "Hancock" and "I Am Legend," broke a four-year hiatus from the screen with "Men in Black 3." Critics were not kind (the film had a 67 percent score on review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes at press time) and audiences who saw the movie assigned it a D-plus CinemaScore.

"Chernobyl Diaries" was the only other widely released new film over the holiday weekend. The low-budget horror tale was #6 with just $9.3 million.

"Men in Black 3" was able to do what "Dark Shadows" and "Battleship" failed to do in recent weeks by knocking "The Avengers" to #2, though Marvel's superhero team-up flick still generated gigantic numbers considering how long it's been in theaters. "The Avengers" earned another $46.9 million over the four-day weekend (and crossed the $500 million mark on Saturday, making it the first movie to ever do so) for a total of $523.6 million. Not adjusted for inflation, "The Avengers" is now the fourth-biggest movie of all time, behind "Avatar," "Titanic" and the final entry in the "Harry Potter" movie franchise.

"Battleship" sunk even further at the box office, dropping 57 percent to #3 after a less-than-impressive debut last weekend. The blend of high-seas action and sci-fi made $13.8 million over the holiday for a domestic total of $47.3 million. "Battleship" has made $232.7 million overseas but has earned even less than Taylor Kitsch's last film, notorious big-budget bomb "John Carter," over the same amount of time in theaters. "The Dictator" was #4 during its second weekend with $11.8 million for a $43.6 million total.

"Dark Shadows" was #5 with $9.4 million for a total of $64.9 million. The latest Johnny Depp/ Tim Burton collaboration won't make anywhere near the box-office coin of films like "Alice in Wonderland," though it did manage to pass "Sweeney Todd" over the weekend. The movie carried a reported production budget of $150 million.

In the limited-release world, "Moonrise Kingdom" collected $669,000 from just four theaters over four days. That estimate puts it ahead of "Dreamgirls" with the highest per screen average debut of any live action film. That number is also higher than filmmaker Wes Anderson's previous best, "The Royal Tenenbaums." Also in four theaters over the weekend: "The Intouchables," a French film that has already made $340 million worldwide, grossed $137,438 through Monday.

One of the stars of "The Avengers," Chris Hemsworth (Thor), will appear in theaters again this weekend as one of the title characters in "Snow White and the Huntsman." The movie co-stars Kristen Stewart and Charlize Theron as the evil queen. It was directed by newcomer Rupert Sanders.

"So I just took the little spin off of both of those things: my gang and the TV show."

It?s shameful and it?s irresponsible and it needs to end, or youth tackle football eventually will.

And that?s where the NFL?s assumption that changes made at the top of the sport will trickle down could be erroneous.? Pro football coaches are accountable to the league office.? College football coaches answer to the NCAA.? At the high-school level and below, who?s really paying attention to what these coaches say and do?

That?s why it?s critical for efforts like the Lystedt Law to be successful in every state.? Without external bright-line rules regarding concussions, coaches who are largely left to their own devices will continue to be able to do things the way they?ve always been done, regardless of any advancements that are made to protect the grown men who play the game.

At every level below college, the challenge for football will be to adapt to the new expectations of society and parents and players, or to face the fact that players and parents and ultimately society will choose another path.? Though it won?t kill the sport completely, it will make it harder for colleges and NFL teams to identify and develop the best of the best available players.

Thus, every college team and every NFL franchise has a direct interest in finding ways to ensure that the stewards of the youth and high-school versions of the game behave responsibly, prudently, and properly when it comes to ensuring the health and safety of the boys and young men entrusted to them.

The world is such that financial planning can often require a bit of blind faith about what will happen in the future. Sometimes, however, we can see a clear indication of what the future holds and plan accordingly. This is exactly where we find ourselves today in relation to taxes.

Let me start off by saying this article is not about politics. Taxes are going to go up in the near future and it doesn?t matter if Republicans, Democrats or Rand Paul are in charge. One only needs to look across ?the pond? to see why. The problem is debt. Governments far and wide are carrying massive amounts of debt. Whether they want to voluntarily or not, the deficits are requiring governments to slash spending and raise taxes. The United Kingdom just took steps to deal with its debt and we will soon as well.

As of the writing of this article, the national debt in the United States is in excess of thirteen trillion dollars. That effectively means each citizen of the country owes $42,000 or so if the debt is spread out among us. That is a lot of money, but it doesn?t even begin to address the real debt problem.

The federal government is famous for carrying off the book liabilities. These liabilities include things like the trillions the government owes to the Social Security fund. The unfunded liabilities for Medicare alone are more than the current national debt and only getting worse as the population bulge known as baby boomers begins to retire in mass. According to USDebtClock.org, the total unfunded liabilities come in at just over $102 trillion dollars. Yes, trillion.

The two biggest problems with the massive unfunded liabilities are social security and Medicare. The total unfunded liability due is about $14 trillion. Medicare is even worse. The cost of funding it in the future is over $75 trillion dollars. The Bush Prescription plan adds another $19 trillion to the bottom line. That is a lot of money regardless of how you divvy it up.

So, how do we deal with the coming national debt disaster? You can see the answer all over Europe. We?ll be slashing spending and raising taxes. Politically, the argument would seem to be one or the other depending on your political affiliation. The debt levels are so high, however, that it will have to be both. Given this, you need to plan for the coming tax increases. How do you do this? Get together with your accountant and financial planner to discuss subjects like converting your IRA to a Roth IRA and so on.

Like many countries, the United States has long lived on credit. The bill for that credit is about to start coming due. Prepare yourself!

In that event, a judge will simply set a sentencing date after Mr. Hernandez undergoes extensive psychological testing.

If that happens, it will be the final chapter in a case that riveted much of the nation in 1979, when Etan, then 6 years old, never made it to school on the first day he was allowed to walk there on his own. At first, he was assumed to be lost. Then speculation arose that Etan had been kidnapped. His photo ? showing his infectious smile and blond locks ? appeared on milk cartons around the nation. The case reminded many of the kidnapping of Charles and Anne Morrow Lindbergh?s son back in 1932.

However, if Hernandez were to change his mind and recant his confession, prosecutors would face a difficult decision: whether to put him on trial without corroborating evidence other than the confession.

Young Etan?s body has never been discovered. According to the New York Police Department, who charged Hernandez on Thursday with second-degree murder, the suspect said he placed the youngster?s body in a bag that was deposited in the trash. A month later, Hernandez, who was then 18, moved out of the city.

The key issue will be Hernandez's mental state at the time of the confession. ?If he recants his confession, then it?s an issue of what level of confidence the district attorney and the police have in the original confession,? says former federal prosecutor Alan Kaufman, now a partner at the law firm Kelley Drye in New York. ?If he is psychologically unstable and there is no independent evidence, the district attorney may not be confident he is the killer.?

To determine Hernandez's mental state when he confessed to the killing, mental health professionals will question him. On Friday, according to press reports, Hernandez was being examined in Bellevue Hospital, which has a robust mental-health division, and had been placed on suicide watch. He had not yet met with his court-appointed attorney, and it was unclear at time of writing whether his arraignment originally scheduled for Friday would take place.?

It was a very popular romantic duet written in 1977. Like many other romantic songs, it communicates a central message of passion. It is this principal of passion that is needed in our human relationships to overcome differences and make them work. It was the Passion Play of the ages that brought hope to humanity as, ?God gave his only begotten son.? ?John 3:16??

Bridging our ethnic/cultural divide involves these passion principals of appreciating, valuing and investing. We miss so much due to our blind spot?because of our?superficial relationships. The surface level is often mired by baseless stereotypes that in turn allow us to resist going deeper.

BLIND SPOT EXERCISE

1. Look at graphic of the cross and the black circle.
2. Sit at your computer with your nose pointing in between the cross and the black circle.
3. Cover your LEFT eye and stare at the cross with your RIGHT eye.
4. Now SLOWLY move towards the computer screen while still staring at the cross with your RIGHT eye.

Somewhere between 10-14 inches from the computer screen, the black circle will disappear and the area where the black circle was will now be white.? This is your BLINDSPOT.

In the blind spot eye exercise, we overcome the blind spot by moving even closer to a point where the circle reappears. It is the same with bridging perceived differences to unity. However, the worst devil of all is what is left to our misguided and uninformed imagination that says stop, proceed no further. Our apprehensive hyperbole tells us to settle for the status quo and to refuse to seek multi-ethnic engagements/friendships. These relationships reside in our own blind spot.? But if we step out of our comfort zone and move closer, we can see the bridge showing us the path to a new vision of one another.

To shy away from engagement with others of a different ethnic group is to limit our passion that we have been given and leaves room for the mental ?fill in? of human nature that is tilted toward division.? As we saw in the blind spot exercise, the brain ?fills in? the blind spot with its most recent information.? If we are divisive, the blind spot is divisive.? Since the brain does not question the misinformation, we believe it to be true.? However, we can permit our blind spot to proceed in a new direction.? When we allow ourselves to believe in changing the status quo, then our blind spot will continue changing the status quo.

Genetic study sheds light on evolution and may help prevent extinction of the Myanmar snub-nosed monkey

ScienceDaily (May 23, 2012) ? A team of scientists from the German Primate Center (DPZ), led by Dr Christian Roos, have completed genetic studies on all five snub-nosed monkey species, providing crucial information for the conservation of these rare primates.

The Myanmar snub-nosed monkey, discovered by a team from Fauna & Flora International (FFI), Biodiversity and Nature Conservation Association (BANCA) and People Resources and Conservation Foundation (PRCF) in 2010, has been of particular interest, given recent efforts in developing a conservation plan and protected areas within Myanmar, to ensure the survival of the species.

Previous scientific descriptions were based on information from Dr Thomas Geissmann's taxonomic description, but the Myanmar snub-nosed monkey, or Rhinopithecus strykeri, is now confirmed as its own species.

Dr Christian Roos, with colleagues from Switzerland, USA, China, Myanmar and Vietnam analysed the DNA of all five snub-nosed monkey species currently known to science. The genetic material was isolated from faecal samples and skin fragments, cut out from museum exhibits. "We can indeed confirm that the Myanmar Snub-Nosed Monkey is a new species," says Christian Roos.

"Even more exciting, however, is the information we gained about the evolutionary history of the species as it allows us insights into primate evolution and speciation," Christian Roos says.

Biogeographic processes, like the raising of the Himalayas altered the landscape profoundly and created new physical and climatic barriers that certain species could not cross anymore. Therefore, gene flow was hampered and new species developed. However, the barriers were not constant over geological times and species started mixing again, resulting in hybridisation, that is the production of offspring between separate species. "Hybridisation is much more frequent than generally thought, making it necessary to adjust our species concept profoundly," said Roos.

Next steps for ensuring the survival of the Myanmar snub-nosed monkey have now been put in place. The current political situation in Myanmar provides a unique opportunity for science and nature conservation but poses all the threats that come with accelerated economic and population growth. "This historic chance for democracy and development may also be a crossroad for nature conservation," says Frank Momberg, FFI's Myanmar Programme Director. With economic growth leading to an increase in roads being built and more forests being cleared, "there is also the one-time chance of implementing protected areas, which the government has now agreed to, and to conduct research that was hampered for years. Myanmar is only now opening to the world." Momberg continues.

Yet to be classified on the IUCN Red List, it is expected the Myanmar snub-nosed monkey will be listed as Critically Endangered, with only an estimated 260 to 330 of the species in existence and all closely related monkeys classified as Endangered or Critically Endangered.

Hunting for food and traditional medicine as well as accelerated deforestation are the main threats for these enigmatic animals. In reaction to the discovery and population estimates, the Ministry of Environmental Conservation and Forestry and FFI organised an international workshop for the conservation of the Myanmar snub-nosed monkey in February this year.

The outcomes of the workshop were very positive, with the Myanmar government now planning to protect the species under Myanmar law and to protect its habitat by creating a new national park in the Imawbum mountain range. In addition, FFI has started a community-based conservation programme on the ground, which provides alternative livelihoods to local indigenous hunters and operates a community ranger programme to protect the species.

Previously thought to only inhabit areas of north-eastern Myanmar, a recent discovery by Liu Pu, a forest guard for Gaoligongshan National Nature Reserve, has now provided the first evidence that the species also exists in China. The discovery and conservation of this new primate species is of great interest for both the government of China and the government of Myanmar. China's State Forestry Administration is in the process of organising a field survey of the snub-nosed monkey's distribution and population in Gaoligongshan National Nature Reserve. It also has showed a willingness to work with Myanmar's Ministry of Environmental Conservation and Forestry to initiate a conservation programme.

Death penalty requested in Tunisian dictator trial

TUNIS, Tunisia (AP) ? The prosecutor in a military tribunal has demanded the death penalty for Tunisia's former dictator over his role in the deaths of protesters during the popular uprising that overthrew him a year ago.

Zine El Abidine Ben Ali fled to Saudi Arabia and is being tried in absentia by both military and civilian courts in Tunisia for alleged crimes committed during his 23-year, iron-fisted rule of the North African country.

Ben Ali is currently on trial for ordering soldiers to open fire on protesters in the four southern towns of Thala, Kasserine, Kairouan and Tajerouine during the early weeks of the month-long uprising that began in December 2010. At least 338 people died in the uprising and another 2,147 were wounded.

The revolution in Tunisia sparked a wave of pro-democracy movements across the Middle East and North Africa that overthrew several governments and became known as the Arab Spring.

Wednesday's demand by the prosecutor is the first time the death penalty has been requested against Ben Ali, who fled to Saudi Arabia on Jan. 14, 2011.

Ben Ali's lawyer, Lebanese attorney Akram Azouri, has dismissed this trial, as well as the previous ones, as political in nature and violating the tenets of international law.

"All the officials interrogated over this issue firmly denied that President Ben Ali gave the orders to use live ammunition," he said in a statement Thursday. "I ask the judiciary to listen to the recordings of the communications between the presidential palace, the Ministry of Interior and the Defense Ministry during this period."

Ben Ali has already been convicted of drug trafficking, illegal arms trading and abuse of the public funds and sentenced to 66 years in prison by a civilian court.

A second military trial is also underway over the deaths of protesters in the north of the country.

Tunisia has repeatedly asked Saudi Arabia to extradite Ben Ali so he can face the charges in person.
