The holidays are not only the ideal time to stay warm and cozy at home with your family, but also the perfect time to get out and about with others celebrating the most wonderful time of the year. Whether you?re driving from shop to shop in search of the perfect gift or heading to grandma?s house for the holidays, here are just a few driving tips to keep your holidays safe, sound and spectacular.

Practice defensive driving ? The holidays are a time of year when people are rushed, busy and distracted. This often leads to preoccupied and unfocused drivers who aren?t paying as much attention as they ought as they make their way to and from hurried holiday parties, chaotic shopping trips and often frenzied family events.

With this in mind, do your part to play the calm, cool and collected driver in the midst of hectic holiday traffic as you practice your defensive driving skills. And when you?re driving out of town, AOL Autos also suggests making sure you know when driving laws change so you aren?t caught with a traffic ticket when you thought you were following the rules.

Park smartly ? As you make your way around town in search for the perfect presents for friends and family, make sure you are making smart parking decisions. First off, always park in well-lit areas. Look for parking spots near street lamps and overhead lighting if possible.

Whether you?re looking for a place to park in a parking lot, parking garage or even as you parallel park on the street, also look for busy areas with both foot traffic and vehicle traffic. This way, you won?t have to walk to your car in the dark with no one else around.

Pack your cargo securely ? Whether you?re on a family road trip to visit grandparents with a trunk full of gifts for the holidays or simply cruising around town with a back seat stuffed with packages, always be sure to keep your cargo secure. Always lock doors when leaving your car unattended for any amount of time.

If possible, when stopping for gas, lunch or a bathroom break at a rest stop, when your car is full of suitcases, presents or pets, try to keep an eye on your car at all times. If you can, take turns using the restroom or grabbing a snack while the other stays in or near the car for added security. And when there?s room, lock up presents and packages in the trunk as opposed to the backseat.

Protect your passengers ? Inclement weather and unexpected driving conditions all play factors in the way your car drives and handles. Before you make your way to your next holiday party in or out of town, make sure your car has the proper tune ups and maintenance.

AOL Autos suggests you get your oil changed, check your tire pressure, make sure you have extra windshield wiper fluid on hand and be prepared with an emergency kit just in case. Also, even before you buckle up, make sure you have the automobile insurance you need to stay safe and protected while on the road. If in doubt, read some auto insurance reviews to help you feel confident in your final selection before you leave.

There are many ways to stay safe on the road any time of year, but these safe holiday driving tips are a great start to any holiday road trip or simple drive around town. There?s no better time than the present to practice the safe driving skills you?re learning.
