As a service to our mastermind members, we often do ?secret shopper? type calls to see how cases are being handled in their firms.? You know that old saying ?while the cat?s away the mouse will play??? Well in my experience, I?ve been shocked by what goes on with the attorney sitting in the room next door!
I?ve called social security firms only to get a cold reception on the phone, as if I were bothering them with my inquiry.? I?ve requested information packets or other resources, only to find that they were never sent out in the mail.? The balls were dropped numerous times before I ever had a chance to make an appointment. I?m not even going to mention what happened further along in the intake process!
As you know I?m a huge advocate of having a successful, 7 or 8-figure law practice, but not at the expense of your time.? Life is too short to be working 80 hours a week and wearing all of the hats in your firm.? You can?t do it all, but at the same time, you can?t delegate tasks blindly to employees.? That?s a recipe for disaster.
You need a solid team in place to facilitate the practice and lifestyle you?ve always envisioned?but it takes some time (?and intentionality) to build the core infrastructure necessary to support the large framework you have in mind.
In fact, having the right staff members in place is so critical that Nancy and I have spent 10 years getting hiring and team building down to an exact science!? We have specific language we use in ads when hiring employees (they practically weed themselves out!) and unique processes within our office to incentivize team members to own their work and take a vested interest in the success of the firm.
And how do we know this works?? Nancy travels for weeks at a time and doesn?t have to worry about micromanaging or things falling apart while she?s away.? Income doesn?t drop and she rarely returns home to a headache.? I take plenty of time off to play hockey, be with my kids and do the things I love.? My team keeps everything running smoothly and everyone feels a personal responsibility to make sure the clients are taken care of while I?m gone.
